WHS Connector wont... connect RRS feed

  • Question

  • So i just got WHS with PP1. Everything was going fine until i had to use the WHS connector. It finds my server (i think) and asks me for the server password. After i put in the password it just says "this operation cannot be completed at this time". This error is so vague that i have no idea whats causing this. Any help would be much appreciated :D

    Hi,

I believe we've seen this before in the forums but I want to make sure this is the same behavior.  Can you access the shares by typing the name of the server i.e. \\<servername>?

Also, when you started to install the connector, how did you access the shares? Was it via \\<servername>\Software\Home Server Connector Software or http://<servername>:55000

If you download the toolkit and run the connector troubleshooter, does it provide any guidance?

    Thanks

  • Hi,
this can happen, if you have a misconfiguration in your TCP/IP settings, usually already in the router. Especially, if DNS requests are redirected to an external DNS server, so that the Connector discovery part tries to resolve the server in the Internet instead locally.
A quick workaround would be to disconnect the router from the Internet by pulling the DSL cable and restarting it disconnected.
The better way would be a proper TCP/IP configuration, but this can hardly be done without knowing more details about your network.
A begin would be the output of the command
    ipconfig /all
on one client and the server to analyze the configuration.
Could you already configure a console password for the Home Server?
If yes, this is the password for the servers Administrator account as well.

  • @Lara Jones i accessed the connector \\<servername>\Software\Home Server Connector Software but i can access it via http://<servername>:55000. One quick question am i meant to be using the WHSConnectorInstall.exe or the setup.exe? The toolkit connector troubleshooter didn't help at all.

@Olaf Engelke I tried pulling the DSL cable and restarting the router but that didnt work either.

This getting really annoying because i see the server on my network and browse the files but the feature i really want is the backups :(

  • Hi,
you should use setup.exe, this will select the proper installer for you. (Where is the output of ipconfig /all, I asked for?)

    Some more questions:
Did you install any 3rd party tools on the WHS?
Do you have a 3rd party security suite on your client PC, which may block access to WHS with its own firewall?
Is the client PC multihomed (has multiple network cards)?
If you are able to login to the server locally - can you take a look into the event logs of the server in Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Event Viewer? Are there any related events to your connection attempt? (i.e. security failures, warnings and errors in the event log)?

  • so do you want screenshots of the ipconfig /all?

No need to send a screen shot. Right click in the cmd window and either select all or click mark and highlight the ipconfig /all text. Hit enter

Paste the text into the comment for Olaf.

  • Hi,
the output looks nearly perfect (I assume you pasted the client settings twice by mistake), DNS settings are correct. You could adjust the TCP/IP Properties of the home server in regards of NetBIOS name resolution by right click the LAN connection in Control Panel/Network Connections, selecting Properties, doubleclicking Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), clicking the button Advanced, clicking the WINS tab and finally selecting the radio button Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP. After confirming the change reboot both server and client and give it some time to build up the NetBIOS naming list on the master browser. (I have no idea, but sometimes a strange feeling, if the default IPv6  configuration of Vista clients may have some influence in context of name resolution.)

Please validate also, if the system time is correct - including the time zone (which is defaulting to Pacific time on a self built system, so an optical exact time here in Germany is in reality 9 hours ahead) - and matches the client. If this is not the case, authentication may fail.

On the other side similar messages have been seen also in context with modified permissions for either IIS or DCOM, which was often caused by additional software on the WHS. Such reasons should find a reflection in the Event log of the server. But this should not be the case on a fresh installed Home Server. Is it an OEM model or a self installed system?

    Best greetings from Germany
    Olaf

  • Sorry i just noticed some of the other questions and i didn't answer  them :(

Did you install any 3rd party tools on the WHS?
no this is a clean install and i have only installed updates via windows update.

Do you have a 3rd party security suite on your client PC, which may block access to WHS with its own firewall?
yeah i do have a firewall but Ive had it disabled throughout the tests.

Is the client PC multihomed (has multiple network cards)?
No, i haven't added any extra network cards

If you are able to login to the server locally and take a look into the event log?
yeah i looked at the event log and i couldn't find any related errors. The only thing that's a little strange is in the "services" tab. It say something like "backup service started" i thought this was weird because obviously i haven't got to the part where i can setup backups yet.

  • Well, there have been more questions (i.e. about the correct system time/time zone of the WHS).
And disabling a 3rd party firewall may not be enough, sometimes you really have to uninstall the security suite (I have seen a report like that some month ago).
Multihomed PCs can also be caused by other devices which declare themself as network adapters, such as Bluetooth or Firewire controllers.
And the backup service on the server is also started, if no client is configured, since it is part of the core Windows Home Server components.
Best greetings from Germany and a happy and troublefree year 2009
