What Happened to the MS Threads Before the Migration ?? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello;

    1) Question:
    What happened to the MS office threads posted and replied to before the migration to the new Forums ??
    (before 2008/2009, or whenever the date was).
    Are they lost ?? If not, How can I access my earlier Word, Excel, etc. threads ??

    2) Suggestion:
    The "Last Reply" date (rightmost column on the Threads page), say, 1/12/2009, could be read in the British Commonwealth and most European countries as:
    ...December 1st, 2009
    or
    ...January 12th, 2009

    This is not a critical issue, but:
    Is it too much to change the date format in the "Last Reply" column to read:
    ...Jan 12, 2009
    or
    ...Dec 1, 2009
    whatever the date 1/12/2009 is ??

    Kind regards.
    Monir

    <<How did you find it?? I did search earlier with no luck>>

    It was rather round-about, I admit. After searching Google, then Google Groups I finally had a link to excel.programming. From there, I could go up a level to the entire microsoft.excel branch (the first link). Then I could locate Worksheet/Functions. And from there I could find your thread (but I first had to correct the function name!)

  • Hi Monir

    To which migration are you referring? From the newsgroups to forums during this past summer?

    Best is probably a Google Groups search. Google has apparently archived a lot of that information over the years. Microsoft never did - things were usually cycled out after no more than six months.

  • Hi Cindy;

    Thank you for your reply.
    Couple of references (with different link results) might make my OP question a bit clearer.

    1) MS Alert Notification (17/01/2007):
    To: monir....
    Subject: Microsoft Community Notification - Re: Sheet Column Headings and Row Labels
    By clicking "Read the Response" on the Notification, it links to:
    Microsoft Discussion Groups Home / Excel Worksheet Functions at:
    but nothing is there under: Discussions in Excel Worksheet Functions.
    Where is the Thread and the Response ??

    2MS Alert Notification (08/06/2008):
    To: monir....
    Subject: Microsoft Community Notification - Re: Difficulty with IMPOWER() Worksheet Function
    Clicking "Read the Response" on the Notification, now links to:
    (the new!) Microsoft Office Communities Home page at:
    Again, where is the Excel Thread and the Response ??

    Regards.

  • Hi Monir

    Yes, this was a web UI to the old newsgroups, that were shut down this summer (Excel in June, as I recall). You'll notice, the URL contains "communities/newsgroups" - that's what makes me quite sure. As I said, a Google Groups search is pretty much the only way to get to that information.

    I don't find your topics, in a quick search. But then, I've never been a user in Google Groups. Here's a link to what used to be the microsoft.excel branch of newsgroups, that were slurped by Google and archived there.

    http://groups.google.ch/groups/dir?sel=usenet%3Dmicrosoft.public.excel%2C&hl=en&

    This appears to be the second of your two messages (with a corrected function name in the subject, which is why I didn't turn it up, before)

  • Hi Cindy;

    The Google archive site you kindly provided is very helpful, and will try to locate the MS Excel subject Thread there!
    Your 2nd URL is the correct one.
    How did you find it??
    I did search earlier with no luck!

    Thank you.
