Create bootable disk RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have my copy of Windows Server 2012 that I downloaded form my Microsoft Partner account. This program appears as IMG file. I open it in Windows 8 and all files structure is created in a network unit. I copied al files in a DVD.

I want to install to a computer as a bootable disk but it told my that this is not a bootable disc. How do I create it so I could install Windows Server 2012 when I start computer?

  • Hi,

I found some other thread about that issue and someone just said that ithe IMG file could simply be renamed to ISO:

I hope that this will work for you, too.

  • Hi,

regarding your problem: I am surprised that you downloaded a IMG file. Normaly you can download the WIndows Server media as ISO files. These ISO files can be burned to a DVD with common software that is available. (Starting with Windows 7 Microsoft even includes software to burn an ISO in windows.)

Another solution could be the use of the "Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool" which can be used to get the contents on a DVD or USB stick. (But unfortunately the link seems to no longer work - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=221699 is a link still used on some pages of microsoft but at least I get a store page afterwards that does not help any further. But search for that tool - it is redistributed a lot and I found a lot of download offers of IT magazines and so.)

And regarding forum: At the moment it seems that the partner forums as locked so I would ask inside a Technet Forum covering Windows Server Setup and Installation.

    With kind regards,
