Will it work on WHS? RRS feed

    Greetings; Just wondering if this could be run on Windows Home Server? I would like to try it if it's possible, tell me anything I need to know.

    WHS is fairly safe without virus protection but a stand alone antivirus product would be more suitable for WHS than One Care.

    OneCare will not install on Windows Home Server.

    It's my understanding that Avast may be readying a version for WHS by release of WHS that will be priced reasonably as opposed to a server license that tends to be pretty costly. I'm sure other vendors will be doing the same.

    If you are using WHS, when One Care installs it will recognize WHS and turn off the One Care backup. You can back up to WHS using One Care but why would you want to?

    Thanks for the reply, I guess I should have been more specific.

    My WHS is currently without any anti-virus, or anti spyware program on it, so after backing up my machines I usually shut it down till next time.

    No outside computers have been connected to my network, my desktop and laptops have Onecare already running on them.

    From a forum on WHS I had been advised to put an anti-virus program on my server but just have not done it yet, would like to try the Onecare Beta on it if possible.

    The "very safe" answer is how I felt too from using it, but posters suggested to me not to run it without any protection incase an outside (questionable) machine was ever connected to my network.

    Would like to keep all my equipment on the same software if possible, is Onecare not designed to run properly on WHS? Or are there some shortcomings I would run into?

    Let me tell you that I ran Symantec for years and touted it to my family and friends, when Onecare came out in Beta and I tried it,  my test machine ran like new!   I changed subscriptions (family too) and have been totally satisfied with Onecare, that is why I would like to be able to use it on the server if at all compatible.

    This is not my experience. I have WHS installed and working my backups just fine. I have just upgraded from OC 1.6 to 2.0, and it did not recognise my WHS backups, and wanted me to configure them. I set OC not to do any backups, and it's fine now.

    I am able to do my WHS backups and also have OC do it's backups, and incidentally I have made a folder in Shares in WHS to which I have OC backup to... and it all works just fine. In addition to this, I have the Vista machines do complete PC backups to a removable USB hard drive. I do occasionally also have OC do a backup to that same drive. I got so many backups I have a hard time choosing which one to use if I need to restore anything.. Thank goodness for cheap large hard drives... Smile Additionally, I have also used Vista BU & Restore to backup files to WHS as well, again to a special folder I created in WHS shares.

    When I installed the WLOC beta it detected that WHS was doing backups and suggested I turn of WLOC backups. That’s fine, but I think that the WLOC GUI should at least state that WHS is handling backups rather then saying that backups are off.

     

    I think that WLOC would make a perfect Add-on to WHS. It just seems to me that the two would make a perfect match. WLOC on WHS would be the hub, so I just log into the WHS console and click on the OneCare tab to see the status of each PC. Just wishful thinking I guess.

    Agreed. It doesn't make sense to me that I have bought OneCare and I will buy WHS only to have to go to another vendor for an A/V solution! Currently using Avast on the WHS without any issues, by the way.

    I have read this thread several times now as the first time round, I missunderstood the conversation. I was about to ask how someone had managed to install WLOC on WHS. I have attempted this even by emulating Windows XP SP2 etc. - No go!

    So my point is - Will Windows OneCare be available for installation on Windows Home Server when or prior to its release?

    This would be great as Windows Home Server does a great job for me backing up files etc. I love the way that it will detect a disabled firewall on one machine and warn everyone on the network connected to a specific server. Using this idea, could the Windows Live OneCare multi machine idea not be squeezed into the same engine and ensure that everyone's virus defs are up to date etc etc All computers on connected to the home server could then have onecare centrally managed using the WHS Console.

    Please please please please please guys! You know that everyone is going to want this when the home server goes out on the market, especially people who already have a onecare subscription.

     

     

    May I ask those people who are running WHS - What are you doing about AV? It has been worrying me!

    Stranger things have happened, but I highly doubt that OneCare will be available for WHS by the time WHS releases as WHS is Windows Server 2003 at the core, which is a different animal than both XP and Vista.

    Oh yes, I had noticed it was 2k3 srv. Despite the instructions saying to not do different things, I thought I would try it and the result was that everythign still works so some of the built in 2k3 srv features can be used but be warned!

    If not this version, I would have thought that some form of Windows OneCare was released to complement WHS. Afterall, the idea is that the package centrally manages a home network including backups etc. Why not? A different subscriptio type could be created if needs be. The people at Microsoft have all sorts of tools so, its not a case of it can't be done. It is a practical solution personally.

    Can anyone help though with regard to a av solution for the mo? I am trying to map drives from the whs machine to a machine with OneCare installed in the hope that we keep me safe to an extent.

    Avast will have a reasonably priced solution out for WHS, I understand. Head over to the WHS forums and I'm sure you'll get some good information about what people are using today. http://forums.microsoft.com/windowshomeserver/default.aspx?siteid=50
