MS Office Fails to Validate; Error Code 0x80180101 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi

Following my MS Update failing with error code 0x80072EE7 and being unable to resolve this with any of the suggested fix's, I tried Office Update alone. This yielded a fail to validate error code 0x80180101 . I have been through the suggested resolutions without effect. The MGA diagnostics output is:

I hasten to add that the copy of office is genuine, registered and has been in use for at least 3 years without previous problem.

    What help can you suggest?

    Regards

  • Hello Chris,

It appears you have 2 different issues, Windows Update and Office is showing as not activated.  Have you already activated Office, what happens if you attempt to activate Office right now?  For the Windows Update issues please refer to this Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941.

If you have already activated Office and the Office Suite says it has already been activated then please follow these steps

    1)      Click the “Start” button.

    2)      Click “Run…”

    3)      Type: %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Office Genuine Advantage\data

    4)      Delete the file: data.dat

    5)      Go to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/ and click the Validate Office button.

After you complete this and are still unable to Validate Office then please rerun the MGA diagnostic tool and post the results.

    Thank you,

  • Thanks for that Matt - really quick.

I was rather hoping the MGA issue was the key to the MS Update problem! Never Mind. I had been through that knowledge base article already, but I'll take a long slow look at leisure and if I'm still in problem put up a separate post.

Deleted data.dat as instructed with the same result as before from validating office from step 5. If I go into any of the office suite and attempt to activate from there I get an already activated response. This is a genuine copy of office and has been installed and activated on this PC for at least three years.

So; ran MGA Diagnostics again with this output:

  • Hello Chris,

It still appears as Office is showing as not activated.  Please attempt the steps regarding deleting the data.dat file and this time attempt to activate Office before you try to validate to see if this works.

The following Knowledge Base Articles can provide more information for Office Activation issues:

How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate an Office product” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us

Activation and registration of a Microsoft product” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851

“How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate a 2007 Office product”

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895

“How to activate a license in Office programs” http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/828958/en-us

Should you need further guidance please post your question/s to the Windows XP General newsgroup forum located here: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?query=activation&dg=microsoft.public.windowsxp.general&cat=en-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=B0DE109D-10E1-4C3C-BCC9-8EB7A22FC6A0&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us.  However if the issue persists I would recommend to uninstall the Office Suite and reinstall it to see if you are able to validate, if you are still having issues with the validation of Office you may contact Microsoft Office support at http://support.microsoft.com/gp/assistsupport and choosing your product to create a support incident.

Also, if after following the KB article regarding Windows Update you are still unable to proceed you may submit a free support request at https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527 and they will be able to further investigate and troubleshoot your Windows Update issues.

    Thank you,
