How to get NNTP Bridge working RRS feed

  • General discussion

  • As mentioned in THIS thread:

    In order to get NNTP working properly, if you are a Bridge user please go to "My settings" under "Quick access" and ensure that you have the "Use NNTP Bridge" setting selected. In order to have the Bridge authentication work correctly (even if you have this setting already selected) all users will need to click the "Save changes" button. This will ensure that the authentication credentials are stored properly.

    ~~~Make sure you also have the updated version of the Bridge, this can be found HERE~~~
    Are these settings which are being rolled out, or what?
  • Quick Access is over on the left, just underneath the ask question button, and it's a pull down menu.
  • And also, I never used bridge before, can someone point me out as what needs to be done to use it (some documentation and installation)? I'm thinking that may be I can use bridge to avoid using the re-designed web forums interface.
  • Let me rephrase my question.. anyone have a link to a built version of the bridge?
    The link Bryant supplied to here: https://communitybridge.codeplex.com/releases/view/112798 is the project source only as far as I can see, and I don't have VS2010 installed to build it with.
    Jochen posted in the decommissioning thread that there currently is not a precompiled version available.
    EDIT: See the link up in the original post for the link to the compiled version.
    ... and now it's not working again.  Seems to be a regularly occurring problem, sort of like the "My Threads" issues :(
  • Is anybody here using SeaMonkey or Thunderbird with the bridge? Back in the day it used to work for me, but now I can only download headers. When I try to select an article I get errors like this:
    Error!
    newsgroup server responded:no newsgroup has been selected
    Perhaps the article has expired
  • Restarting the bridge no longer helps. I'm getting this error persistently (the "Passport Header Not Found" one). I feel a great disturbance in the Force, as if all bridge users started downloading millions of messages at once, and were suddenly blocked. I suspect some server somewhere simply can't handle the load.
  • It's the same for me - works for a while getting headers and bodies OK, then when I come back to it and get new headers I get the 503 error and need to restart the Bridge. Tiresome, but less tiresome than using the web interface.
    Is Jochen aware of this issue?
    I am not able to repro your problem... for me it worked after restarting the bridge... also I have now a version, which automaticaly refreshes the token. I will publish it on codeplex in a couple of minutes... Also there will be a logfile, which you can sent me if you have problems...
  • v54 still times out for me (if left idle, get Passport Header Not Found), but unlike v53, simply clicking Stop and then Start restores it... don't have to Exit and restart Bridge anymore.
    Thanks Jochen.  No one deserves the shabby lack of support you are enduring.
    Thanks,
    David
  • Yeah, mine isn't staying connected either, but it seems to take longer to happen than before.
  • Does not the new bridge v54 support Windows XP? Since I still prefer to use classic Outlook Express as my newsreader, better than Live Mail.
    The bridge can be installed on Windows XP with .net Framework 4, but cannot run properly.
    Any one who can help?
    I have it running on XP with SeaMonkey (similar to Thunderbird). Like others I am having the Passport Header Not Found problem, but it is no worse than on my Windows 7 machine.
  • Is this working reliably for anybody?
    I am still getting the Passport Header Not Found error.
  • It is still timing out somehow and restarting the bridge gets it going again.
    Mine doesn't keep running for more than about three minutes. I can retrieve maybe a couple hundred headers or a dozen message bodies, and then it starts throwing "Passport Header Not Found". Even restarting doesn't help - usually after restart, I get the error right away. I have to shut it down, wait for a while, start it back up, and then it would work for another three minutes. Completely unusable, of course.
    Once I've caught up with the backlog of newsgroups I find its working for me if I regularly stop/start (not exit) the bridge. If I forget to stop/start then I invariably get the 503 error.
    When I tried to launch the new bridge after installing it successfully on Windows XP, a very large dialogue with full of error messages appeared. After closing this large dialogue, there will be a common "This program encounters a problem and needs to be closed" notification appeared. So I could not see a launched bridge. And there will be a new crash dump file created in the new bridge installation folder. I have no idea about the large error dialogue. Any one who can help?
    Did you have the NNTP bridge installed since before on the machine?
    After my first installation (in Windows 7), I got a message box about "encountered an error and needs to close". I uninstalled and made a fresh install, and now it works smoothly.
    For me it works fine. I get the Passport Header after some time, but not very often. I go to the bridge window and press Stop and then Start, and I on the air again. Jochen: would it be possible to have the Bridge to do this automatically?
    However, when I initially had installed, I got the error as soon as I tried to access a group. I went into My Settings and unchecked "Use the NNTP bridge", save, checked it again and saved. I assume that you have already done this, as you are able to retrieve headers at all, but I mention it just in case.
    Yes, I had another version "Microsoft Forums NNTP Bridge v1.1" installed, which was originally downloaded from http://connect.microsoft.com/MicrosoftForums.
    I tried to uninstall this version and v54, and did a fresh install. But v54 still has the same issue.
    I will post a new thread and provide the error dialogue and crash dump file. Would you please have a look?
    I looked, but since my expertise is in SQL Server and not UI applications, there is not much I can say with confidence. My gut feeling, though, is that it is time to retire Windows XP. Yes, XP is nice in many ways compared to the newer "modern" operating systems. But it has one distinct drawback: it's a 32-bit OS. So the clock is ticking.
    However, I find that when I've left my PC sleeping and resume, stop/start doesn't get things going. I then need to exit and restart the bridge to eliminate the 503 error.
    I wonder what's going on here?
  • I agree. I just want to have Outlook Express for Windows XP as my preferred news reader. It's really better than any other news reader.
