CRM 2011 Data Import?

  Hi all:<o:p></o:p>

  I have a
  list of Contacts I need to import into CRM 2011, and there is a possibility
  some of the data to be imported exists already, the customer said to search on the
  email address, and if an existing record is found, do not import the contact.<o:p></o:p>

  In CRM v4 I
  used a data utility I wrote myself to do such imports, but in v2011 I have had
  some success using the built-in import tools. However for this case is it
  possible to use the OOTB data import tool run the import as the customer specifies,
  searching for existing email addresses? I am guessing I would have to write a
  new duplicate detection rule to run whilst the import is happening?<o:p></o:p>
