Dual-bootable system using VAIL & WIN 7 using two partions on the same drive - Is it possible?

Question
-
I have a 2TB boot drive on which VAIL only consumes 60 GB. The rest of the drive is available to be used for storage. I would like to install WIN 7 on that partition as I would like to back up to Mozzy. In other words, I would like to select on start-up between VAIL and WIN 7 (F12 key on my Intel mini-itx H57 mobo). Also, WIN 7 has to be able to read the other three 2TB drives which have been linked into one volume through DE.
I am skeptical this setup will work but perhaps others may have other suggestions on how I accomplish the setup I am imagining to be ideal for me
Thanks,
Kurtosis

Is it possible? Yes, or at least I would presume so; most Microsoft operating systems can be installed in a multiple boot configuration. You'll need to install Windows 7 after Vail.
However, it won't be a supported configuration, and Windows 7 will be unable to read the contents of the drives that are part of server storage.

Just to further clarify, my goal to backup to Mozzy using WIN 7 - nothing really else. If this can be done from VAIL by installing the Mozzy app -- problem solved.

All I can tell you there is: try it and see what happens. Likely the client will install and work, assuming it will install on Windows Server 2008 R2. If not, well, you knew it wouldn't be "supported" already, right? :)

If you're talking about Mozy, then no, it won't work. Mozy won't run on any server OSes.
You may be able to trick it by running it on a client machine and creating an NTFS junction (or link or hard link, I forget which one works with network paths) and backing that up, but you can't run Mozy directly on Vail.Check the mklink command.. run mklink from a cmd prompt.
What you'd want to do is make a linked folder that points to the share on Vail that you want to back up, and have Mozy back that folder up... or, use DropBox. :)

It sounds like I am better off running Mozy from a client PC and then just accessing the VAIL shares from that PC.
Thank you for the comments & advice.

Yeah, but Mozy won't backup network shares either. That's why I suggested mklink.
Good luck!

How about mounting the VAIL share as a drive? Like I have it now for my WIN 7, e.g. U:. I thought that worked when I used my ReadyNAS X-6 which was setup that way. But then it has been a couple of years since I last used Mozy.

Last time I used Mozy (about a month ago) it did not allow me to back up mapped drives. That's why I suggested making an NTFS link. That MAY trick it, but it may not.
Give it a shot.

Mike, you are correct (as I read the fine print on the Mozy website). Mozy only allows internal drives to be backed up. This is probably intential, to make it difficult to bakup more than one computer under one Mozy account as the annual cost is extremely cheap & considering that there is no cap on the amount of data one can backup under a single account.
