  • Question

  • Hello members
I am trying to setup my printers for all our machines. As the WHS had to be in another room I am looking at this software: http://www.printeranywhere.com/download-windows.sdf
Does anyone of you know if it would work with WHS?

    Thanks

There is no problem with the Brother MFC7820n, though the Canon S6300 is a USB printer. Lately I have searched for a USB print server that would do just that without success.. Canon helpline could not tell if there is a suitable server for the printer.
So'I'll wait and see what turns up with time.

  • Where are your printers connected now? Given that Windows Home Server is not designed to be used as a desktop operating system, you probably don't need printers configured on it. If you want to share the printer anyway, Windows is capable of doing so without additional software.

The WHS is in a different area of the building and connected through network/to power adaptor and working well. The printers; one usb and one mfc are not directly(ethernet) connected to the whs. The idea was that my machine would not have to be switched on for other users (laptop or wireless pc) for printing .

  • I see. So you want to connect your printers to your server and share them. It's often possible to do that. One problem you will run into is that your printers are likely consumer printers, so they may not have drivers that will install on Windows Server 2003. There are other issues that you may encounter as well. If you do a few searches of the forums you should be able to get an idea of what others have achieved.

A better solution, though, is a network aware multifunction printer. Then you install drivers etc. on your home PCs and you're ready to go.

If you have appropriate drivers this should be no problem

Here is how to install and share printer on server and print on client:

    1. Logon to your Home Server using remote desktop or using keyboard/monitor
    2. Install printer drivers (use windows 2003 driver if you can otherwise try windows XP drivers)
    3. Connect printer, print test page.
    4. Share the printer as outlined below:

    How to Share a Printer

    1. Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

    2. Right-click the printer that you just installed, and then click Sharing.

    3. Click Share this printer, and then type a share name for the printer.

    4. Optionally, click Additional Drivers, click the operating systems of the client computers that may attach to this printer, and then click OK. By adding drivers for these operating systems, users on client computers can connect to the print server and automatically download the appropriate drivers for this model of printer without having to configure anything.

    5. When you are prompted to do so, insert the Windows Server 2003 CD-ROM ( or WHS DVD or printer driver cd).

    6. Click OK to close the printer properties.

    7. Close the Printers and Faxes folder

    (From http://support.microsoft.com/kb/325860)

    To install printer on client:

    1. On client open explorer window and in address bar type \\server (Or your own servername if you're using a custom name) and hit enter.
    2. Double click printer icon for the printer you want to install.
