My evaluation consist of 3 to 4 hour long backup sessions... RRS feed

  • Question

  •  My evaluation thus far has consisted of three to four hour long backup sessions, something Acronis True image can do with the click of one button and in 15 to 20 minutes.  I have eight personal PC's in my home and another dozen or so in two business locations, twenty PC's in all running currently.  So, in three days of usage of my WHS trial period, I have managed to back up a grand total one one computer.  This is ALL WHS does?  A simple backup that I can do in 15 minutes otherwise?  I would like to try the 'remote access' feature with several of my Vista 64 sytems, but the instructons are as confusing as a nucleur physics compound question?  More imporantly, is it possible load up anything OTHER than a system backup on the WHS?  Like a movie, some pictures, etc. and actually access them?  I mean what formula is needed to put a file on the WHS and have access to it?  How do I load a file to share on to WHS?  I know I'll get beaten with a stick for this, but so far my experience with WHS is well...useless?  And I have a lot of computers with a lot of important business information to back up.  Three to four hours to backup a single computer?  Then, how do I put anything on the WHS OTHER than a simple back up of one of my systems?  I would like to put some picture files and a movie on my WHS trial.  How?  gentlemen...?

I can see that one. :)

Don't try to access the shares through the Console.  You should be accessing the shares through the Shared Folders on Server icon on the desktop.

Have you created any user accounts on the server?  (The button just to the left of Shared Folders?)

  • I believe WHS is quite simple.  Have you installed the connector software on your pc?  This will put a folder on your desktop that you use to access the files on your server.  Then you use this to store and access your data.  You then can use the connector icon to connect to your WHS console and get the remote access setup and view other things.

Backup length depend on different factors.  Size of the hard drives, network speed, how different each computer is.  THe first backup takes the longest and is suggested to be done wired lan.  Each backup after that is actually really fast.  The advantage of WHS is that you don't have to do the backups, WHS does them automatically.  Feel free to ask more questions as we are here to help.

  • Ummm, yeah I installed the connector software on the one computer I have backed up to my WHS.  I can open the backup files on the WHS from mthat connector.  How do i put files in the shared foldr and the folders for music, pictures, etc?  The only thing I have been able to di is backup my PC to the WHS and open those back up files.  I have not installed the 'recovery' CD, no need to.

There should be an icon on your computer desktop called Shared Folders on Server.  Inside there, you will see various shares (Music, Videos, Photos, etc).  That is where you would want to store your digital media.

If you have updated to Power Pack 1, the process to install the Connector should be exactly the same on a x64 system as it is on a x86 system. You can access the software by browsing to \\<servername>\Software\ or http://<servername>:55000/.

Note: updating to Power Pack 1 will require that you update the Connector software on all the computers that are currently connected to your Windows Home Server. If you do not, you will receive prompts from the connector software that the connector is out of date. Also the computers that are on the older version will not backup until they are updated to match the version on the Windows Home Server.

  • When I open shared folder or any of the pre installed folders, a box pops up and ...what is that.  I am asking, "how do I put data INTO these folders?"  Any instruction on how to work with these folders would be helpful.

I have power pack 1 on the WHS.  I just received the trial disk from Microsoft a few days ago.  I assume PP1 is on the connector software roo.  I have not tried installing the connector software on any of my Vista 64 or 32 machines yet.  I am still trying to enter data other than a 'backup' on a Windows XP/Vista 32 dual boot machine I have working on the WHS network.  he only machine I have connectd right now.  I have reread the startup guide and there is nothing on that guide that explains how to use the various fiolders, shared, pictures, etc.  So, thus far I have managed to use an XP machine and do a manual backup successfully.  Ihave not been able to place a sing item in shared folder, picture etc.  When I click on shared folder a box pops up displaying something I have no idea what it is asking?  Where is an instruction guide I can use?  I don't know howI got here, it's all very confusing.

I would start out with the homepage of Windows Home Server. It will explain what your server can do for you. From there you can link to this page ("Getting Started") were you will find more detailed information. Also you could check your server's manufacturer website for additional information.

    Concerning your initial post:
The first time a computer is backed up it can take up to a few hours, depending on the amount of data to backup and speed of your network. Knowing this, computers using a relatively slow wireless connection should always be connected through a wired LAN connection when backing up for the first time.

All subsequent backups will only copy changes made since the last backup which should take a relative short time, also depending on the amount of changes made since the last backup. Although each backup only backups changes, don not confuse this with "incremental" backups: your Home Server backups will always contain a full image.

For storing files on your server, you can connect to the servers "shared folders": When opening a share you can use it as any other folder on your computer, provided you set access for the useraccount you use to log in on your computer. This document  (see page 17) will explains this in detail.

I have read the Getting Started guiide twice, no problem with 90 percent of the info.  The word document you sent with Page 17 noted will not open on my Vista 64 system with Microsoft Word 2000 Small Business suite fully updated.  I use the software on all my systems without a single issue.  I am confused and I think my question is simple:

I have a WHS system with all updates and hooked to my wireless home network via R45 hard installation.

In my home, I have eight computers running.  Right now six are connected to my wireless network and fully operational.

I have installed the 'connector' software to only one of those six computers connected to my wireless networ.

I have managed to do a manual backup of my OS drive and the Slave Data storage drive.  That is all I have done.  That is all the data I have stored on my WHS.

Now, please help at this point.  Is this all WHS does?  I would like to put a picture in 'shared folder' which I have created on WHS.  or put a picture in the 'Picture' folder and store it on my WHS.  Then I would like to go to my 'sattelite' computer and open that picture onto my satellite computer.  Howq do I store the picture in the folder on the WHS?  Do I store the picture from the satellitle computer by opening the 'saved restore files' and using those?  Do I place a picture in the 'shared or picture' file on the WHS from the WHS?  I'm sorry, when I open the shared folder or picture folder there is no option to place a file in the folder?  This is my current issue/problem.  Thanks.

That's because the Technical Brief is for Office 2007 (docx file).

Just copy the picture to the Photos share.  First, on the computer that you installed the Connector software on, do you have an icon on the desktop called Shared Folders on Server?  If so, try opening it.  You should see various shares (including one called Photos).  Open that share and copy a picture to that location.

No.  You need to go to the network shares by either using the Shared Folders on Server icon on the desktop or by typing \\server in the address bar.

What does the window say?  Please type the exact message.

EDIT:  If it says something about username and password, that's because either A) you haven't created any user accounts on the server yet or B) the user account you are logging into the client PC doesn't exist on the server.

  • Ok, from my satellite system connected to my WHS.  There is a desktop icon stating shared folders. When I try and open that (first time I saw this desktop icon) it ask me to sign in I can not singn in.  I don't know, I put the WHS password in and my user name (I think ) and no logon.  Nothing.  Then, when I open shared folders fro the Console on that computer, just a general tab pops up...nothing no way to access that shared folder.

  • Allow me to chime in here. You are attempting to access the folder via the WHS console, which is fine for defining folders and permissions etc, but is not how you access things for day to day use. On your screen imagae over to the left, you have a shortcut icon that reads "Shared Folders on Server". Double click on that and you will get a normal Windows Explorer type window showing you all of the shared folders on your server. With that open, you can copy, paste, drag & drop - the same as you would with any other windows folder.

Assuming that you are logged into your desktop machine as "RD" (making an assumption from your console screen dump), then you will have permission to access the User folder for "RD" also.

    Hope this helps.

  • First and foremost, thank you so much for your help.

Well, on my satellite system, I have created a user profile, apparently I had not done this before...shrugs shoulders?  So many passwords and creation of this stuff I don't which is which.  Anyway, now I can open the shared folder icon from the desktop and place a picture in a folder listed there. Claping wildly is the theme with the audience.   And better yet, the picture file shows up on WHS where I put it.  And I can open that 'picture' folderr.  So, now if I can just remember what I did and all these passwords and this, I may be ok.  I doubt it.  Is there anything else I should know?

    1.  Can I access my WHS installed in my home from my offices?  I have three seperate wireless networks.  Home (WHS installed here).  Office 1 seperate network.  Office 2 Seperate network.

    2.  How do I access say my home PC from my office PC?  Or is moving in this direction like a head on with a phone pole?

    3.  Anything else WHS does?  My son games.  he just loads his games on the HD of is system.  Any way to store program files and execute them from a satellite PC?

    4.  Any other features/tasks this WHS unit can do for me?

    Thanks.  R.D.

I'm not sure if this is what you already did or not, but if you set up the account on the client PCs with the same username and password as what you have set up on the server, you can seamlessly access the shares (just double click the desktop icon and it will let you in automatically instead of prompting you for a username and password).

Yes.  That is through the Remote Access website.  You should check the Technical Brief for Windows Home Server Remote Access on how to set it up (and if you have any questions, feel free to post them in this forum).  As a matter of fact, you might want to check the Introducing Window Home Server website for more info on the system in general.

That is also done through the Remote Access website.  However, in order for it to work, the client PC (at home) must have one of the following operating systems:  XP Pro, XP Media Center 2005, Vista Ultimate, Vista Business, or Vista Enterprise.

Yes, although for gaming, you really want it installed on the local PC.  However, you can use WHS to store the install files for apps/games/etc.

ladyland said: 4.  Any other features/tasks this WHS unit can do for me?

You can use it to stream music, photos, and videos to various devices (such as an XBox360).

That is because the document is in Office 2007 format.
You will find an update on the Microsoft website: Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats

Download and installing this update enables you to open Office 2007 document in Word 2000.
