  • Question

  • 've had Windows XP installed on this computer for at least 2 years. It was genuine, and was bought from a computer shop and installed by them when I bought the computer (I also have the original disc's). Now when I started it today, a little blue star is appearing in the bottom right hand corner, and says I may be a victim of Piracy, and that my Windows is not genuine???? Could this be some sort of virus/adaware or something, or what should I do?Sorry for thread spelling error.

In the past I was able to validate my Windows and download their tools, like Windows Defender (requires real windows to download). This morning, Defender Plus could also not be launched and gave an error (something about a missing file).

When I restart, before I can login there is a big box saying that iy's not genuine, that I should get genuine, etc and to wait a few seconds and then 'resolve later'.

  • Edd9129,

Could you send us the WGA diagnostic report from the non-genuine machine by running MGADiag.exe using the below link:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

You can run the tool and copy paste the results to this thread.

    Thanks,

  • I just tried to redownload Windoes defender, and it had to validate that I was running genuine Windows. It validated fine (and said it was genuine) and let me download it, although the icon in my system tray tells me otherwise?

It says my Windows is genuine, but the icon in the system tray remains telling me it is not. What is 'Downlaod center' and why does it have expired code next to it? Does Windows need a renewal license or something crazy????

  • I just went to http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/default.mspx?displaylang=en and clicked 'Validate Windows'. It validated fine.

  • Hi Edd,

You have an older version of the notification component please update it to latest version using below link:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=69498

After the installation, please reboot the system and you should not get notification prompt anymore.

Please do let us know if the above steps helped to resolve the issue.

    Thanks

    Satish

  • Ok I'll try that Satish. Is there any reason why it would have suddenly started doing this today? Will it allow Windows Defender to run fine (I'm assuming the Genuine tool was lovking it?)?

  • Edd:

It looks like there is a problem when the previous version attempted to install (It says WGA Version "Unknown"). Reinstalling the newest version manually should clear the issue.

Based on your diagnostics output, Defender should install and run just fine. I would recommend checking out Media Player 11 and IE7Beta3 while you're at it too! :)

  • Vedran133,

    Your issue is totally different.

Occasionally we have had some customers that purchased valid copies of Windows or received them when purchasing an OEM system but failed validation. In most cases this has been determined to be the result of the actual Product Key used to install the current version of Windows XP to be blocked. This most often has occurred by the computer being repaired and a Blocked Product Key being used on the computer at that time.

To confirm there are no other blocking issues with your validation such as clock out of synch or IE settings blocking the validation process please run the WGA Diagnostics located here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/diag/

If everything here is confirmed as functioning properly and you still have issues validating could you please run the wgadiag tool here and post the information for us.

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Without actually posting your Product Key in this post compare the last 15 characters of your COA to the last 15 characters in the Diag output. If they are not the same you will have to change the product key. The easiest way to do this without having to re-install applications or lose data is to refer to the Repair Method in this KB Article.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341/en-us

Warning: as with any such major procedure it is highly recommended you backup all critical/personal data on your computer that you would not want to lose and ensure you have the software to re-install your applications should something happen.

We can also attempt to change the key using the Product Key Update tool below. The Genuine Advantage Product Key Update Tool is only valid for users attempting to change their current non-genuine Product Key to a genuine COA sticker or genuine Product Key – all without a reinstall! http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=50346&clcid=0x409

Note: This is provided no core system files are corrupted. If they are you will need to complete a clean install of your system.

  • edd9139,

Can you run the Diagnostics again, and post it here?

    Thanks,

  • Well, after the patch and 2 restarts it seems to have gone. I tried to redownload the genuine checck tool, to post the results here, although when I load it, it gives me a code to place i nstep 2, although no step 2 ever appears.

Why do I not have a download code as shown in the log above?
    Friday, July 28, 2006 6:53 AM
  • The download code is only a time-stamp code when you head to Microsoft's Download Center. Its so you do not have to repeatedly validate when you head to download things from there within a certain time period. More of a convenience feature. :)
