  • Question

  • I was in the middle of watching a show on my computer, and my computer decided to update even though automatic updates are turned OFF. So it updates my computer, restarts it, wipes my hard drive, and when I tried to do a system restore, it said an error has occurred and could not be restored. Thank you Microsoft <3 I've lost all my photos from my last 2 vacations, all my term papers, all my projects, all my work files, all my music, all my videos, and any other personal files i had saved on my computer. This is not the first time this has happened. Thanks.

  • This is not related to Windows Home Server, otherwise you would eventually have a backup of the failed client.

And a wiped harddrive due to Windows updates I have yet to see. Maybe you caught some malware causing the incident.

A PC specialist still may be able to recover some or even all of your data (assuming your wipe means "only", that Windows does not boot any more).

Also - having important personal files only on the hard drive of a PC calls for trouble:

    • disks can fail from one day to the other
    • overvoltage can hit you PC through the power or network cables and destroy all attached devices
    • fire, water, theft may also affect your PC
    • a simple virus infection may delete or encrypt all your data
    • ...

So have at least two separated backups of important stuff (things can also go wrong, just while you overwrite one), one of those not in the same room as the PC, eventually even stored in the cloud.

    Best greetings from Germany
    Olaf

  • Hello,

Specifically, I'd ask in the Windows Update forum on Microsoft Community.

As the Microsoft Community is on a different platform, we cannot move the question for you.
