Precautions to take when I upgrade from Windows 7 Pro to Windows 10, regarding Microsoft Money Sunset? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello,

I recently did the "nuke the bills" procedure on my Microsoft Money file which I have been using for 25 years.  I'm on Microsoft Money Sunset (version  My Hardware is a PowerSpec B728, Intel Processor Core i7 @ 3.40Ghz with 16.0 Gb Ram.  The procedure worked great the speed improvement in the program was excellent.

Since Microsoft dropped support for Win 7 I intend to upgrade to Win 10.  When I bought the PC about 2 years ago it was with the disk required + license for Win 10.

My question for the forum is, what precautions should I consider to do before upgrading the operation system?

The Money program is so important to me it will be the first program I install after the computer's OS is updated any and all tips for this would be much appreciated.

    All the best,

  • You have Money backups on other media, right? I am thing a couple USB flash drives.

    Record your Windows license keys.

If you have any batch files that contain "program files", those will probably have to be changed to  "program files (x86)".

  • Also, make sure to reinstall the patch to mnyob99.dll as listed in the first sticky post to this forum after you install Money. Place your Money file in your Documents folder, or another folder where you have full access. Do not place it in the folder where Money is installed. Double-click the file to make sure it opens from the correct location. Before closing the file, check where the backups are set to go, and ensure that the location actually exists. It should also be a location where you have full access.

  • Also, go to the Windows Defender Firewall Advanced Settings and add a new rule to BLOCK Outbound traffic from Microsoft Money.  This will save the time at startup that Money spends looking for the non-existent Microsoft Money server,
