My WHS crashed last night. Display now shows: Disc read error occurred Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart RRS feed

  • Question

  • When I turned on the monitor this morning, the following message showed:  Disc read error occurred    Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The server was on during the night.
I heard some activity from the harddrives in the evening.
It was disconnected from the router/internet.

    2 SATA drives
I think that I have Service pack 3 (dont remember - this is supposed to be plug&play isnt it..)

What I have done so far:

-Checket Bios - both drives show up.
-The OS disc is disc 0
-Put the drives in IDE mode in Bios
-Checked the SATA-cables, swapped them, tried a fresh one

I then tried to do a reinstall, but the only option was a new install.

    Question 1: Why?

I have searched the net and seen several others reporting similar problems. Most has taken their discs out and doing a chkdsk on them, finding them faultless. Still they report that WHS give the same error message: Disc read error occurred

Any suggestions on what I could do before taking the discs out and performing chkdsc?

  • A disk read error sounds more serious.
Either the cabling is not properly connected (which you already tried to exclude), or the file system or sectors on the disk are damaged - only to check with chkdsk.
If a disk cannot be read, there are good chances, that a server reinstall is not offered, because the old installation cannot be detected.
Just in case, check the FAQ How to recover data after server failure.
