Vista Product Key Already in Use RRS feed

  • Question

  • I purchased Windows Vista Ultimate not too long after it came out at Fry's Electronics. I had some compatibility issues with drivers and programs not being supported which caused it not to boot up a few times forcing me to reinstall the OS. Well, when I finally got it going it was alright for a while, well up until today, when I tried to update the bios for my motherboard. After I had updated, I had to restart my computer and it would never boot up. So I tried several different things to try and get it running but nothing worked. So, I was forced to reinstall the operation system. Well, when I got it all running again, I tried to activate it and it said that the product key was already in use. I was unaware that it was like Windows XP Home and Media Center and could only be activated a certain amount of times. I thought it would be like XP Pro and that was why I bought the Ultimate version. That was why I upgraded from XP Home to XP Pro. If I had known this I would have saved the $300 extra and bought the Home edition. Is there anything that can be done about my Vista key? If not, can I purchase just a key from somewhere and not have to buy a whole new copy?

  • Hello Colter,

All retail versions of Windows (XP, Vista..so on) can be activated as many time as you need. The only thing to be awaire of is that for XP you could activate on the internet (I think) 5 times. On the 6th activation, you would needed to Activate by Phone. With Vista, you can activate by the internet 1 time and then all other times, you need to Activate by Phone.

So to solve your issue, just follow the setps below to Activate by Phone:

    a) If you have access to the Start button: Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

    b) If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality". Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type "c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe" press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enterand follow steps to Activate over the Phone.

NOTE: The key to this process is that you need to talk to a Live Activation Rep! When you first call, you will be interacting with an Automated Voice, either select the option to talk to a Live Rep or if there is no option, do not enter any numbers. This should force the automated voice to tansfer you to a Live Rep.
