I cannot get MSN to index my site - why? RRS feed

  • Question

  • My site http://www.lampspecs.co.uk has been live for about 18 months. There are over 4500 pages and all of them are indexed by Google and Yahoo. MSN on the other hand only has between 0 and 3 pages.

I have had a sitemap.xml and robots.txt file since day 1 and have updated them, but it does not seem to have had any effect on the number of pages indexed.

I would be very grateful, if anyone here can tell me why my site is not included in the index and what I can do to to resolve the issue.

    many thanks,

    Paul Reading.

  • Hi following up on this, it appears that we have around 50 pages indexed which, although better than it was is nowhere near our competitors. I will ask around and see if I can get some input from others about what you might want to try to get better indexed.

Is your site listed in DMOZ?

I have the same problem. my site www.selectfavors.com is indexed everywhere else 200+ pages

MSN / LIVE SPACES only indexed 2 pages in 4 months.

My site has been submitted to DMOZ in january but not listed yet.

I can not believe how crappie this search engine is.

It almost seems like they gave up on making it work when they decided to buy yahoo.

    imo

  • No it is not. It is very difficult to get into DMOZ. The trouble is lots of the editors in DMOZ seem to have given up adding new entries.

My site has been around a lot longer than your and so you might not have the same problem.

  • I wouldn't wait on DMOZ, others are right the chances of ever getting listed are slim.  Yahoo still offers their paid directory service which could help.   I can never prove it for sure but the moment we put our promo items site in Yahoo it appeared that MSN picked it up and started to index heavily.  It could have been a total coincidence and the price is pretty steep.  As others have noted and as I pointed out before MSN seems not to tolerate XML files if they are slightly malformed.  Some (we were one of them) have had problems with imperfect UTF files being created by some of the free sitemap creators.   Yahoo and Google didn't care, but others have reported an immediate fix when resubmissions were made to live.  As always your mileage may vary but there are trials of various sitemap programs available.    It shouldn't matter, it can't hurt, and it could help.

Hopefully MS will chime in on this thread and help get your lamp specs site listed.

  • I am looking for the same information. Sitemaps get submitted to google, yahoo and MSN all at the same time - yet MSN never indexes more than a small percentage.

    http://www.westfloridacomponents.com

For example, right now google has 2800 indexed; MSN has 287.

Any input would be most welcome.

    Thanks!
