I need to find my wep code RRS feed

  • Question

  •

Steve, dude, I don't have the stuff you told me... I have Change Windows firewall settings, but I don't get to details and there is no SSI or whatever it is you said that gets me to that huge alpha numeric code I once had.  I have multiple wireless connections that I signed on with using that code but I can't get the code from them either... how do I get that code?  Using XP.

    Thanks

  • If you are using Windows Live OneCare and have used OneCare to secure your wireless router, the settings are available from within OneCare.

    1. On the computer that you used to help secure the wireless network, open OneCare and click Change Settings.
    2. On Firewall tab, click Advanced settings.
    3. On the Network connections tab, click your wireless network, and then click Details.
    4. The SSID and network key appear in the Security Information area.

If you aren't using OneCare or did not use OneCare to secure the network, you'll need to follow the instructions from your router manufacturer to either access the information on the router by connecting to it with a wired connection and signing on to the administration/configuration screen or reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure it, again per the router manufacturer instructions.

The key is not typically visible in the wireless connection settings on the PC, it is masked out.

  • If Details cannot be clicked, then security for the network was not enabled from that PC in OneCare. If you used a different PC, you need to go to that PC. If you performed it manually, you'll need to refer to the router manufacturer's documentation on how to access the router setup or how to reset the router.

If you don't see the details, then your best option is to reset the router. Typically there is a button on the back/bottom of the router that you depress for 5 to 10 seconds to reset the router to factory default settings. You will then need to refer to the Router documentation for setup instructions.
