  • Hi Slimjaydee,

When you Activate an OEM System Builder version of Windows, it needs to be dome by Phone.  The Phone Activation Process involves you telling the Activation Rep (or the Activation Phone Prompt) the Installation ID (IID) shown in the Activate by Phone Wizard.  This allows the Activation Rep (or the Activation Phone Prompt) to generate a corresponding Confirmation ID (CID).  Once you have entered the Confirmation ID into the Activation Wizard, Windows activates.

Your Diagnostic Report is telling me that (for some reason) the Installation ID (IID) and the Confirmation ID (CID) do not match.  This is strange, but easy to fix.  Follow the below steps and your Windows will either Activate itself, automatically or (more likely) will ask you to re-enter the Product Key and then Activate by Phone again.

    1) Click Start button.
    2) Type: CMD.exe into the 'Search programs and files' field
    3) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'
    4) Type: net stop sppsvc   (It may ask you if you are sure, select yes)
Note: the Software Protection servive may not be running, this is ok.
    5) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareProtectionPlatform
    6) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar
    7) Type: cd %windir%\system32
    8) Type: net start sppsvc
    9) Type: slui.exe
    10) After a couple of seconds Windows Activation dialog will appear. You may be asked to re-enter your product key and/or re-activate or Activation may occur automatically.

    Thank you,
    Darin MS

  • Hello slimjaydee,

Of course Best Buy sells retail upgrades and full retail licenses for Windows, but I was not aware that Best Buy sold syetmbuilder/OEM/Small manufacturer licensing kits for Windows.

For great advice on all topics XP, visit http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp

  • I'm sorry. I got the computer from Best Buy. I got the disc from Toshiba to upgrade my Toshiba laptop. Worked fine for a while, but now this copy is not genuine...I don't understand.
