Windows is not genuine-How I fixed it.

    Question

  • I bought my Dell Laptop about a year ago with Window Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I have a sticker on the bottom of the laptop with the product key. I have used Vista without any problems until today when a warning told me that "Optional Update delivery not working" and stating that I need to validate my copy of Windows as genuine. I thought that it might have been some kind of fake scam so I ignored it but it kept coming back, so I tried to look online for a solution and one of the solutions said to try restarting my computer. I restarted my computer and now I get a black screen on star-up that says "Windows Vista (TM) Build 6000 This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the bottom right corner of the screen. Also another pop-up says "Windows must be reinstalled to activate" but Dell never sent me the installation CD. I clicked on a link to go online and resolve now and tried to "Validate my Windows" by all I get is "Validation Incomplete" "The validation service is unable to determine whether this copy of Widows Vista is genuine." Also the code in grey at the bottom is [0x80080250]. I ran the MGA Diagnotic Tool as directed in the forum and this was the results that it gave me:

I've tried to search all over this forum for a solution but haven't found one that worked. The Windows Product Key:*****-*****-F4GJK-KG77H-B9HD2 from the diagnostic report doesn't match the one that is on my sticker. I don't know if this is the one Dell uses when they install but it doesn't match mine.

    So my questions are:

Why did this happen? How do I fix it? and How do I keep it from happening again?

Just a reminder... I have no access to Windows, the only thing I can do is use Internet Explorer or go back to the black screen warning me my product is not genuine anymore. So I can not get to the start up menu or control panel to do the "cmd" thing.

  • Okay, I just finished a round of golf and didn't hear back from anyone about how to resolve this so I just started trying what everyone else was told to do.

First I started the computer in Safe Mode and check the control panel to see if my version of Windows was activated. It said that "Activation Status not available in Safe mode."

Next I went to the comand prompt (cmd.exe right click and run as administrator) and then typed in "sliu 4" and got a promp to restart the computer in safe mode.... Nothing changed.

Finally I used these steps given by Darin to someone else:

    Step set #1

    1) Open Internet Explorer

    2) A Browser will open, type: %windir%\system32 into the address field

    3) Find the file cmd.exe

    4) Right Click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator

    5) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    6) Hit the Enter key (Mine said something like License reinstall successful...)

    7) Reboot 2 times (except I only had to do this part once.)

Then, when I reobooted my computer it started back up at the black sceen but this time there was a new pop-up saying that there was a change in my product lisence and that I needed to enter my Product key found on the sticker underneath my laptop. I did this and ran the program that came up and like magic I was back in Windows.

To finish things off I went back to the Windows Validation page a ran it again and this time it was successful. I also re-ran the Diagnostic Tool and got the following report:

  • Hello tuinuku08,

My apologies for not posting to you sooner.

Yes, you followed the exact steps that I would have suggested and Yes, your Vista is back to a Genuine State.

In your post, you state that Vista asked for the Product Key (that you got off the sticker on the side or bottom of your computer) but you do not mention if you have since Activated Windows. If you have not, I encourage you to do so, now, so as to ensure you do not encounter any interruption in using Vista because it hadn't been activated and the grace period had ended.

To Activate by Phone, Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

If you have any additional Activation or Validation issue, please don't hesitate to contact me again,

My issue seems similar to the issue found on this thread http://forums.microsoft.com/genuine/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2416309&SiteID=25 which seems like you have a possible solution to the problem. In addition I opened a Support Claim my Support Confirmation number is:

    Support Request Number: 1068089235

I just remember that there was another type of pop-up that said that Windows Aero was not working with my Windows Vista, I don't remember all the details of what it said but it doesn't pop-up everytime.

To Activate by Phone, Click the Start button, and type in "slui.exe 4" in the search field and then press the "Enter" key. This will bring up the Activate by Phone dialog window. Follow the steps provided by the window. The phone activation process should only take about 6 minutes.

  • I did what tuinuku08 said but I didn't get a message about license reinstall successful. Instead, it said "Error 0x1AD occured in connecting to the processor on server .." What should I do? Please help me. :|
