How do I stream an MP4 to a media player from my home server. RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have an HP 495 and have loaded every movie I own on it.  The server is in my office and we have hooked it up the the wired network in our house.  We have a WD Live TV in our bonus room and it will not play any of the MP4s in an efficient manner...there are significant delays and there looks to be buffering errors.  What is going on?

  • It may be any of several problems. First, Drive Extender (the technology that creates the seamless storage pool) can sometimes cause the issue you describe. Or it may be that you have network issues which are interrupting the smooth playback of movies. It may also be that your set-top device is stuggling with a non-standard codec (remember that .mp4 is just the container, any of a number of codecs can be used to encode the audio and video streams the container holds).

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
