Answers

  • Good Morning Malcolm,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report which reads:

    File Scan Data-->
    File Mismatch: C:\Windows\system32\gdi32.dll[6.0.6000.16643]

This line means that the critical system file gdi32.dll has either

    a)     Been tampered/modified/become corrupt to the point that its Signature Hash no longer matches the Signature Hash listed in Windows Vista's System Catalog.

    Or

    b)     Been updated but the file's Signature Hash was not updated, in Windows Vista's System Catalog to reflect the updated file's new Signature Hash.

Windows Vista compares a Critical System file's Signature Hash with the Signature Hash listed in its System Catalog to determine if that Critical System file has been tampered with. When this happens, depending on the file that has been tampered, Windows Vista may show as Genuine or non-genuine, but either way, Windows Vista won't Validate correctly and may also exhibit other strange behavior.

There are no Updates that contain gdi32.dll so possible cause b) is unlikely.

To resolve your issue, we need to replace or repair the file so its Signature Hash matches what is listed in Windows Vista System Catalog. I can provide a couple of suggestions to do this:

    A)        Install Service Pack 1 for Windows Vista

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en)

SP1 may contain an updated copy of this file which would overwrite the bad copy and resolve the issue. (Disregard this step since you have already tried SP1 and it failed to install.)

    B)    Repair Windows Vista using System Restore:

    1) Reboot Windows Vista into Safe Mode

    2) Go to Control Panel

    3) On the left hand side of the Control Panel window, click Classic View

    4) Double-click Backup and Restore Center

    5) On the left hand side of the window, click Repair Windows using system restore

    6) Select Choose Different Restore Point, put a check in the box that says Show restore points older than 5 days, select the restore point that corresponds to the date before you first noticed the issue.

    7) Click Next button.

    8) Reboot back into Normal mode

    9) Windows Vista should no longer be in Reduced Functionality Mode (RFM)

If neither of these solutions resolves your issue, the last resort, that I can provide, is to reinstall Windows Vista. But before you do that, create a (no cost) support request below:

  • I have been using windows vista since I purchased my computer some 18 months ago.  Windows now shows the following "An unauthorised change was made to your windows license"  The only access I have is to go on-line to seek help.  I cannot access the computer in any other way e.g. to go to system restore etc.  I cannot re-boot using my windows vista disc even when I chaged the bios to allow booting using disc first.  I am not computer literate and so any solution would need a full guide.  Please help.

  • Hello Malcolm,

We request all users to initially run the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT).  This will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Please provide a brief synopsis describing your customer scenario, including any dialogue or error messages, or codes. Error codes can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage web-pages when an error is encountered.

By clicking the link below, you will download the Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT).  Then click the Run button. Then click the Run button again. Then click the Continue button to perform the diagnostic. The Windows tab should show, click the Copy button to paste your report to the clipboard.  Then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum by adding a post in it and pressing Ctrl V (to paste the text). Clicking the OK button will clear the Diagnostic window. Here is the download link:

    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012

Please tell us about the Certificate of Authenticity (COA) for your copy of Windows Vista.

    1. What edition/version of Windows Vista is titled?

    ·         Home Basic

    ·         Home Premium

    ·         Business

    ·         Ultimate

    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?

    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?

    4. Please provide the customer scenario you are experiencing.

    5. DO NOT post the Product Key.

Not sure what to look for, see this page to reference your COA:

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/product.aspx?pID=b5c507e5-3522-40de-a2f4-97d82b39cc47&cID=ea710cad-37b0-4975-bcd6-abfee19961df&method=oem&displaylang=en

NOTE: The data collected with the MGADT does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you. The information can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

Thank you for your participation here on the Genuine Advantage forums. We look forward to working with you.

  • Good Morning Malcolm,

The core to your particular issue centers on the line in your Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Tool (MGADT) report which reads:

    File Scan Data-->

  •  I have restored Windows although I had to use the Help service to find the Restore Centre as I could not locate "Classic View" or "Back-up & Restore Centre"  No problems however, everything is up & working fine.

    Many thanks for your help
