Navigating between custom tabs in web page code. Is it even possible?

  I have a couple of custom tabs setup on OCS communicator providing related functions.  I'm looking for a way for one of the tabs to re-direct the user to another tab when a button is clicked.  Is it possible to some how tell the OCS client to switch to a different tab?  Preferably I'd like to be able to pass parameters to and fro also.
  
  Anothe slightly related thing - can I force the selected OCS contacts to change from my tab web page code, or can this selection only be made by the user?
