Vista keeps asking me to validate windows. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Every thing was fine until the installition of SP 2 failed with an error message. Tried to restore to an earlier date and that didn't work.

After that every time I start the computer (Dell Inspirion 9400) I have to type in the Windows key and validate it. It will accept the key and validate to genuine windows, but I would rather not have to do this every time I start the computer.

When windows update tells me there are updates available it goes through the update process, but probably only one or two will install. Then there is a list of failed updates.

Have been searching for information on how to fix this for many days, and havent found an ansewer yet. Hope someone here can help.

    Posting the diagnostic report below.

  • Did all of the checks and changes I could find and finally got tired of seeing the same window saying this copy was not valid or genuine so did a reinstall. Took a day to get all the updates done, but seems to be OK now.

A few more restarts without asking to validate will make me feel better.

    Thanks for your help.

SP2 is still not installed - and I can see nothing wrong with your report.
I suspect that there is corruption of the registry, which will be very difficult to isolate.
What Anti-Virus and other security software are you running? When was the last time you ran a full system scan with updated anti-virus definitions?
Have you ever used a Registry Cleaner/Optimiser on this machine? (DON'T!)

  • As I said, the trouble started when SP 2 failed to install. I am using MS Security Essentials and scans show a clean computer.

One thing I forgot to mention is that after SP 2 failed, and restore to an earlier date failed, I tried to uninstall SP 1 using Windows Control panel and Command Prompt both, and it will not uninstall either. If I could remove it I could use the system DVD to do a repair.

After weeks of this problem I finally tried a Registry Cleaner last evening. Didn't change anything.

I can go back to "as new" using the recovery partition, but as I didn't have a current back-up when I tried SP 2, I hate to loose what is on the HD now. I had just finished some house cleaning a few days before trying SP 2, but as I never had a problem with a SP before I didn't back-up. Not very smart.

    Thanks

First things first - UNDO and changes that the registry cleaner may have made, if you can!. Registry cleaners are often the cause of such problems as you are currently having.

Your PC is an HP, so I assume that it came preloaded with either McAfee or Norton. Did you use the special downloaded  removal tool for the program after the Uninstall? If not, do so now, and also for any other AV you've had in the meantime.

You should also run a specialist malware cleaner - download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (free version), then update it and run a quick scan in all user profiles on the machine.

Once complete, run a System File Check -
    System File Checker
            Click on Start
            in the Search box, type
            CMD.EXE
wait for the system to find what should be the only file related, and right-click on it - select Run As Administrator.
Accept the UAC prompt if you get one, and then in the window that comes up, type

            SFC   /SCANNOW

            and hit the Enter key
wait for the scan to finish - it'll take a while - and then reboot, twice!

run the MGADiag report again, and post back with the new report.

So - how are you posting here?

You need to start a whole new thread of your own -  preferably in a much more appropriate forum, such as

Give a LOT more detail and hope that they can help!
