VB 6 referenced assembly name RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm compiling an old project written in VB 6. There are some missing references due to which compilation is failing. I need to know the reference which I should add for functions like Format, Left, Right etc. Please help!

  • As you're talking about assemblies, I guess you've already upgraded the project to VB.Net.

Those functions are part of the "Strings" module in the namespace Microsoft.VisualBasic. They are located in Microsoft.VisualBasic.dll. The reference to it is not removable from the project. You can either import Microsoft.VisualBasic at project level or file level, or use the qualified name Microsoft.VisualBasic.Format etc.

For future you may consider replacing them with methods like SubString() or ToString().

  • No. I've not upgraded to VB.net. My project is still in VB 6 only. I need to include one of the references that we select by going into Project -> References window but I don't know which one to add.

  • Why the term "assembly name" in the title? It's .Net terminology. This is a forum about the .Net based VB versions since 2002. Here you'll also find a link to a VB6 forum:

  • Hi Rasik Bihari,

    Welcome to the MSDN forum.

This queue is about vb.net. I’m afraid that your topic about VB6 is unsuitable here. I will move this thread to off topic forum. You can find the correct forum with the help of this link: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vbgeneral/thread/6a0719fe-14af-47f7-9f51-a8ea2b9c8d6b.

Sorry for any inconvenience and have a nice day.
