Won't Update RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium but since I had a Norton Tune Up I keep getting the message- this copy of windows is not genuine and now Windows won't update automatically and when i update manually I get error code C0000022. It's definitely not a counterfeit copy of windows, I bought it from a reputable dealer

Asus tell me I have to reinstall windows but I don't want to have to install all my programmes all over again. Can anybody help me?

    I ran a diagnostic tool:

  • Thank you, sorry, how do I run them?
    Tuesday, December 11, 2012 1:17 PM
  •   Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

  • Please ignore my last - I had the wrong Key!

Open Regedit and navigate to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spldr Key

Export it to a reg file for safety!

    Select Permissions,

Click on Advanced, then the Owner tab

Make sure that Administrators is the owner, and put a tick in the 'Replace owner...' box at the bottom

    Click OK once

add Administrators to the 'Groups or Usernames' list, and give them Full permissions

    CLICK OK

    Close Regedit

Now open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands....

    REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spldr /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S

    Post the results.

  • Thanks. What's a reg file? The Owner is me, right?
    Wednesday, December 12, 2012 12:59 PM
  • Sorry - using shorthand again!

to Export the key, right-click on it, and select Export - this will offer by default to save the exported file as a .reg (registry) file, which can be used to restore the data if anything goes wrong.

The Owner of a file (or registry Key in this case) is usually the entity that created it - which is you only for data files, and which can be a number of other entities in the case of registry keys and system files. The most common owner is the TrustedInstaller service, which has special permissions to enable the system to apply updates, while denying the normal user the right to modify it. Usually, only the Owner has rights to change permissions for access. Making an individual user the Owner of any registry object in anything but a data area is a recipe for problems, so we need to make the Administrators group the owner instead - of which any admin user is a member, thus allowing multiple users the possibility of making changes, without reducing the security of the system too much.

Once we have the system working right, we'll reset the Owner and permissions back to what they should be.

  • Thanks, did it. Owner was Administrators (Bhashini/PC) or something like that.... and it was on the Groups or Usernames list with Full Control selected. Did I get it right?

  • Yes - but it was me that got it wrong :)

Please run the following commands, which will avoid the problem....

    REG ADD HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spldr /v Start /t REG_DWORD /d 0x0  /F

    REG QUERY HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\spldr /S
