  • You can reactivate your Windows Vista installation by performing the following:

    1. Click on the Start button and in the Start Search box type in: slui.exe 3

    2. Press the Enter key on your keyboard.

    3. Type in the Windows Vista Home Premium 25-charactater product key that is affixed to your HP PC.

    4. Follow the instructions for phone activation (no charge).

  • The problem appears to be in the Licensing Store - please try the following.....

Recreate the Licensing Store with the correct data.

    1) Open an Internet Browser window.

    2) Type: %windir%\system32 into the browser address bar.

    3) Find the file CMD.exe

    4) Right-Click on CMD.exe and select 'Run as Administrator'

    5) Type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you are sure, select yes)

    6) Type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing

    7) Type: rename tokens.dat tokens.bar

    8) Type: cd %windir%\system32

    9) Type: net start slsvc

    10) Type: cscript slmgr.vbs -rilc (It may take a long time for this to complete, please be patient)

    11) Restart your computer twice.

You may be asked to enter your COA Key and/or Activate. – if asked for the Key, use the one on your COA sticker on the machine’s case (you may need to activate by telephone).

Once complete, run another MGADiag report and post back with the results.

  • Followed Noel's advice, and when I went to activate after the second restart it came up with an error about the SKU code (could be wrong, forgot to write it down).
Here's the result from the  second MGADiag report:

P.S. My sticker on the bottom of the computer has faded considerably and I can't read the key there. I'll have to look for the paperwork that came with my computer, but is there some other way that I would be able to find it?

  • Unfortunately the only place that Key is likely to exist is on the sticker - a bright light and a magnifier often help.

Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan....

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    CHKDSK C: /R

    and hit the Enter key.

You will be told that the drive is locked,

and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, press Enter, and then reboot.

The CHKDSK will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient!

After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) -

    then run the SFC.

SFC -System File Checker - Instructions

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories

Right-click on the Command Prompt entry

Select Run as Administrator and accept the UAC prompt - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up.

    At the Command prompt, type

    SFC /SCANNOW

    and hit the Enter key

Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot.

Copy the CBS.log file created (C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log) to your desktop (you can't manipulate it directly) and then compress the copy and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder (http://skydrive.live.com ) and post a link to it so that I can take a look.

Post a new MGADiag report with details of any error messages encountered.

The "Cannot verify component files" error is of a type which could indicate other problems - and which is best fixed (if possible using the CheckSUR tool.

Please download and save  the CheckSUR tool from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947821

(you'll need to look in the details for Windows Vista, downloading from the Microsoft Download Center)

Run it - The tool can take anywhere from 5 mins to a couple of hours to run (or 'Install') depending on how much it has to do, and may exit silently - it may appear to freeze for most of that time, but be patient.

The result is logged in the C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log file  - and an archive …\checksur.persist.log file

Then zip the CheckSUR.log and upload it to your SkyDrive Public folder so I can take a look - post a link in your reply.

  • That didn't find any problems, so we'll have to go the manual route to fixing the known problems.

Back in a few minutes with a fix protocol for them.

  • Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    I've uploaded a file - stzaa.zip - to my SkyDrive at Noel's SkyDrive
     Please download and save it.

Right-click on the saved file and select Extract all...
Change the target to C:\ and click on Extract
Close all windows (it would be a good idea to print these instructions!)
Now reboot to the Repair Environment - as soon as the machine restarts, start tapping F8 - this should bring up the Advanced Boot Menu, at the top of which should be the option 'Repair my Computer'

Pick that (If the option isn't present, cancel out, reboot to normal mode and post back, and we'll investigate other possibilities)

You'll have to log in with your username and password.

Pick the option to use a Command Prompt
     At the prompt type
    DIR C:\stzaa
hit the enter key - if you get a 'Not Found' error try
    DIR D:\stzaa
    or
    DIR E:\stzaa

The drive letter in use when you find the folder will need to be substituted (for<drive>) into the following command...

    XCOPY <drive>:\stzaa  <drive>:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h

    (e.g. XCOPY P:\wfire P:\windows\winsxs /y /i /s /v /h )

run the command (it should take almost no time)and when the prompt returns, type
    EXIT
and hit the Enter key to exit Command Prompt - reboot to Normal Mode Windows.

Now run SFC /SCANNOW in an Elevated Command Prompt
then reboot and upload the new CBS.log file to your SkyDrive Public folder, and post a new link

Also run a new MGADiag report, and post the result.

  • F8 did nothing. Hit Escape to access my startup menu but there was no 'Repair my computer' option there. Should I just follow the steps listed in a normal command prompt?

  • Normal Mode windows doesn't give you access to the files to be able to replace them.

This complicates matters a little :)

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands (see the instructions later) - post the results so we can see if they work

    TAKEOWN /F C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests /A
    ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests /grant Administrators:(F)
    XCOPY C:\stzaa\Manifests\*.* C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests /y /i /s /v /h
    ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\msil_comsvcconfig_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_6.0.6002.18005_none_eb63fcdad4ebfd16.manifest /grant "NT Service\TrustedInstaller":(F)
    ICACLS C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifests\msil_comsvcconfig_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_6.0.6002.18005_none_eb63fcdad4ebfd16.manifest

    .

Then run another SFC /SCANNOW and post the new CBS.log file

Assuming that works properly, we can ignore the other error (it's for a file that I believe should never have been included in the store anyhow) and start the more complex process of getting the permissions back the way they should be.

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)

    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.

    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.

    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.

    Well spotted, that man! :)

That seems to have fixed the manifest file problem - the others we can ignore (I think!)

Now we need to go back and undo the changes to permissionschanges that we made.

Unfortunately, that's not as easy , and we'll have to use Windows Explorer to do the job

First we need to correct the Ownership on the file itself

    Open Windows Explorer

    Navigate to the C:\Windows\winsxs\Manifestsfolder.

in the folder, find the file

    msil_comsvcconfig_b03f5f7f11d50a3a_6.0.6002.18005_none_eb63fcdad4ebfd16.manifest

and right-click on it - select Permissions

Now click on the Advanced button

Now click on the Owner tab, then the Edit button, and the 'Other Users...' button

Enter"NT Service\TrustedInstaller" (without the quotes) in the box and click Check Names

the entry in the box should change to TrustedInstaller- click OK once

Now highlight the TrustedInstaller entry in the Owner box, and click Apply (Accept the warning - the listed Owner should change) click OK out all the way to Explorer

Now you need to do the same thing for the winsxsfolder itself so navigate up to the Windows folder, and right-click on the winsxs folder, and follow the same procedure.

Then post back and I'll complete the instructions (it's way past bedtime!)

  • Nope - still no change.

Before we complete the permissions exercise, it may be a good idea to have a look at the Event logs.

    Please open Event Viewer

In the left pane, navigate to the Windows Logs

right-click on Applications and select 'Save all events as...' save as Apps.evtx

repeat for the System logs - save as Sys.evtx

Compress both files, and attach to your reply.

  • Hmmm - looking at the logs, it's evident that you have some fairly major problems on the system.

I think a repair install is going to be the way forward...

Download the SP1 Refresh for your language and edition from the links on these pages...

    Heidoc -Microsoft DR Download links

The links are for downloads from the Digital River servers run for MS, so are about as safe as you can get :)

Once you have it downloaded, you then need to burn the DVD from it - use either the Windows Disk Image Burner, or (better still) your favourite burning application at the slowest speed possible.

Note that you do NOT 'drag and drop' the file to the disk, you must use the 'burn an image'
option from your app - or you'll end up with a useless coaster :)

Once you have the disk burnt, check that it boots the (or any other) system OK - but do NOT start the repair from there - you must start the repair from within a normal Windows boot.

Follow the instructions in this tutorial - http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/3413-repair-install.html

    - and they should help you get through it (it's not as difficult as it looks!)

Always ask questions first if you're unsure - either here, or in sevenforums.

    Good luck with it!

    Wednesday, March 13, 2013 9:59 AM
  • OH - b&gg&r! (Sorry about that - blame lack of caffeine!)

No, it's not - and it's more difficult yet, because there are no secure downloads of Vista with SP2 :(

    See the Tutorial here instead...

Sorry about that - it's what comes of posting while waiting for the first coffee of the day :)

  • Sorry for leaving this for a while. I've been busy and had use of another computer.

I don't have a Vista upgrade DVD to use. What's my next move? Is upgrading to 7 or 8 an option?

  • You don't need an Upgrade DVD - you need the full DVD (which is actually the same as the upgrade).

The instructions I linked to explain how to create the proper DVD for your situation (in a link to http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/230249-sliptream-vista-sp2.html )

  • If you haven't yet committed to the repair or clean install, I may have a possible 'cure'

Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands.

    REG QUERY HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{B54F3743-5B07-11cf-A4B0-00AA004A55E8} /S

copy/paste the results to your reply

  • Sorry about the log delay!

All the output looks OK to me.

What happens if you run the following command?

    SLMGR.VBS /DLV

Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth
No - I do not work for Microsoft, or any of its contractors.

  • Sorry again for the delay - and even sorrier that I'm out of ideas....

All I can suggest is that you contact WGA support...

WGA Support can be found here

    North America:
    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/cu_sc_genadv_master?ws=support&ws=support#tab4

    Outside
    North America:

    http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support#tab0

    Please
let us know if (and how) MS manage to repair the problem without a repair
install of the OS - it would be useful for future
