The Live Mesh client status is always "Starting Live Mesh".

Question

I installed the Live Mesh client, but the status is always "Starting Live Mesh". Never been able to sign in. I reinstalled the client again as I knew there were some updates last week to no avail. How can I get out of this? Thanks.

Hi,
Would those of you still encountering this problem mind submitting a bug report with your logs?
Please go to http://connect.microsoft.com/. Sign in and then select Live Mesh Tech Preview on Your Dashboard. Click Feedback and follow the instructions for collecting your logs and then submit a bug.
To get your logs:
1. Click Start.
2. Select All Programs and look for the Live Mesh folder.
3. Click Collect Live Mesh Logs.
4. Your logs will be bundled together in a cab file now located on your desktop.
Attach your LiveMeshLogs.cab file located on your desktop to your bug.Note: you will have to submit a bug first, then edit it to attach your logs.
If you do not have a Live Mesh Connect account you can send email to lmprev@microsoft.com instead and attach your logs to the email.
Thank you,
Ben.Wednesday, May 7, 2008 9:35 PM -
Hello gsaich,
There are a couple known issues with the log collection script that will be fixed very soon. Do you have a space in your NT user name, or have re-directed your Desktop to a special location? In the meantime, you can just zip up the following folder and attach the file in Connect?
- if on XP: "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Live Mesh"
- if on Vista: "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Live Mesh"
- and possibly %temp%\Live Mesh\Servicing[0000].log
Sorry for the inconvenience,
Richard

Hi Dennyd,
There are no processor or memory restrictions on the installation of Live Mesh, but we do require that XP have Service Pack 2 installed.
Thanks for the question,

I had this same problem on my XP work laptop. I reinstalled twice using the LiveMesh.exe that I saved when I tried to install it the first time. I then uninstalled everything, restarted, and went back to the mesh website and installed using the run option when I was prompted. Everything installed correctly and it started up perfectly.Sunday, May 4, 2008 6:36 PM

Hi WangChao,
Were you able to install the Live Mesh software, perhaps following Kyle's advice? If not, can you provide some additional information? E.g., What operating system are you using?
Thanks,
Ben.Monday, May 5, 2008 7:26 PM -
I also had the same issue on XP. I installed/uninstalled numerous times with the same result - "Starting Live Mesh". Yesterday I booted XP and Live Mesh asked me to sign in and now it works as expected. I wonder if it could have been a router traffic issue since Xp was my fourth device and the first day of attempting to install on XP two other computers on my network were synching furiously.

I've successfully installed in a Virtual PC 2007 virtual machine. The image I used was Microsoft's tester image for Win XP SP2 with IE8 beta that I downloaded from the Microsoft site. No problems at all with the install.Thursday, May 8, 2008 2:56 PM -
Hello Jim,
Did you have OneCare installed on all the machines? We are seeing some random issues with the Live Mesh installation when OneCare is running. If you have OneCare installed and run into this issue again, please send us your Live Mesh and OneCare logs to lmprev@microsoft.com.
Thank you,
Nadia

Hello Nadia,
Yes One Care was installed and running on three of four machines including the XP machine ( which had the issue). I did file a bug on Connect - bug id 341794 which included the Live Mesh logs. I will upload One Care support logs to Connect. I will also uninstall Live Mesh and reinstall to see if I can repro, and if I can repro will send you new logs from Live Mesh and One Care.

I am having the same problem and have uninstalled and reinstalled several times. I have tried "Collect Live Mesh Logs" but it does not create a cab file on my desktop.Saturday, May 10, 2008 2:25 PM

Same problem here...
But I am not running OneCare, at least not that I know of, if installed it should be visible in Add/Remove programs, right?

Try installing Mesh while running as an admin.

I've had the same problem since installing Live Mesh for the first time yesterday. The problem only occurred on one of my 5 machines, the others installed the client without a hitch.
I submitted a bug report with logs yesterday but have solved the issue tonight so will update my bug report shortly.
I'm using a Netgear DG834G wireless modem router with uPNP enabled. I decided to restart the connection tonight and as soon as the router reconnected to my ISP the Live Mesh client popped up asking me to log in.

I "solved" my problem...
It seems there was some kind of restriction in my internet connection. I turned on my wifi adapter and everything worked.
Now that I added the device I went back to my network adapter and it's also working.
For some reason I could not log in with my network adapter (cable)

Seba

I'm also having this same problem. Install always reports it is unable to configure all updates, and from then on status is always "Starting Live Mesh".
I was unable to submit the bug via the Connect site, as it put me on the waiting list for Live Mesh, so I can't submit bugs. I did email the bug report to the email provided earlier in this thread.
I am not running Onecare.

hi,
I got PC's with Windows XP as well as Windows Vista
In vista there is no problem it just starts fine.
In windows XP, most of the times after reboot (or boot), the status of live mesh remains at "Starting Live Mesh".
Sometimes that status just remains that way , but i can view news / devices / folders without problem.
Sometimes the status just remains as "Starting Live Mesh" and never goes inside. whenever i click it just says "Starting Live Mesh".
What I did was.. Right Click and Exit, wait for Few Seconds or a minute then Re-start. It just starts fine.

Here I am lurking for an answer to this same problem. I've tried everything mentioned in the thread:- Computer meets requirements- Don't have OneCare- Admin account- Uninstalled, rebooted, reinstalled- Exit & restart- Did an update today (July 31st)Someone mentioned uPNP. Does it have to be enabled? Mine isn't.Does it require certain services? Some were disabled. It's not network related because it works fine on a second machine on the same LAN.I did submit a bug report 2 weeks ago, but still no news :-(Thursday, July 31, 2008 10:17 PM

Hi S_Mahaux,
Did you submit your bug through the Live Mesh Connect site? If so, please feel free to post the Connect Feedback ID here. That will make it easier for me to track this internally, as well as allow other customers to view and validate your bug.
Thanks,

Thought this might be interesting for some... Was having the exact same issue on a hotel network. Just for giggles I enabled Tor/Privoxy (annonymizer). Lo and behold it worked immediately.
My suspicion is that there is an issue with certain hardware NAT/firewall combos. Whatever the hotel has in place here was causing the connection to stall. Pushing the connection through SOCKS to the annonymizer worked fine because it got me past that network element.
I suspect that, for some folks, this is the issue. For folks who have 1 PC working and 1 not on the same network, obviously this is not likely to be the case :)
Also interesting is that, once started, I turned off Tor/Privoxy and LM stayed connected with everything working fine. So it is something in the initial connection that the network element doesnt like - very interesting.- Edited by Mark Lambert Friday, August 1, 2008 7:31 PM more info

I had the same problem in new windows 7 pro installation and it was not corrected by all the workarounds. After spending hours chatting with microsoft support about a desktop background problem that also could not be fixed, it was suggested that I setup a new admin user and ALL the problems resolved in the new user. He could not explain the basis of the problems.Sunday, November 15, 2009 11:12 PM

Thanks for sharing your experience - a corrupt user profile can cause all kinds of issues.
