My 2-PC home is riddled with approximately 20 gb of hacker-infestation RRS feed

  • In cleaning prior to a reformat and reinstall, using low-level formatting is useless as is killdisk in getting at the virtual/other memory blocks.  I don't have the resources to purchase every tool there is just to find they, too, are unable to rid the PCs of virus software.  What now?

  • You post was moved to the OneCare forums, which is not the correct place for your question. It was off topci where you posted to and remains off topic here.
If you boot the PC from a CD, you are not loading anything that might exist on the drive into memory. You can safely delete the partition and reinstall the OS from that environment, overwriting anything that exists on the hard drive. You do not need to perform low level formatting or use any special utilities to rid the PC of infected files if you choose to reinstall the OS in this manner.
