How to convert .jpg files into a format that will copy into a MS Word document

Question

Sir or Madam,
Please help me with the following.
To save space in my report I need to copy.jpg files into a Word document as an icon.
When I attempt to do so the photo’s open up. I only want the icons to be shown.
Please instruct me on how to do this. Thank you.
Windows 8, 64 Bit, Internet Explorer and MS Word 2007.
I apologise for directing this message to the wrong forum. Please direct me accordingly.
