Try this, and take the phone Option, and hold on for a real person to explain to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/quick-start/activation-faq.aspx
Activation FAQs at above link.1. Click Start, and in the Search box type : slui.exe 4
2. Press ENTER on your Keyboard
3. Select your Country.
4. Take the Phone Activation option, and hold on for a real person. mm
If locked out except for 3 choices, use the reduced functionality option to get into Windows to do the above Activation.

Hello hrr810,
If you do not have access to the Start button: Reboot and login to Vista, a dialog window will come up. In that window, click the option "Access computer with reduced functionality" (or whatever option that opens a Browser). Once you do that, Internet Explorer or Firefox browser will open. In the address bar type c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe press enter, a new window will come up, type: slui 4 and hit enter and follow steps to Activate over the Phone.
To reenter your Product Key, fillow the above steps but type: slui 3 instead.
Thank you,

Darin,
Thanks for the help. I still can't even get to the "access computer with reduced fuctionality." Once I get to preparing desktop, it starts the activation screen but will not accept any options. i get various error msgs for RUNDLL32.EXE and NEWDEV.EXE (new video ). What I can get to is the task manager and only about half of the services are running. I tried running the windows vista x64 recovery disk again and it finds the OS and lists it as (recovered) but I still only get so far when I try to activate. Is there a way to slui.exe from the task manager???
