Replacing WHS 2011 RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello:

I need to replace my WHS 2011 server.  None of Microsoft's Servers will work for me because of the domain requirements and they have more functions than I require.

This could be a Linux server or some other flavor.

    These are my requirements:

    1) It will plug into a network switch using standard Ethernet Cat 5 or better cable
    2) It needs to be visible to each workstation with some kind of connector software
    3) I use GoodSync to keep my files synchronized with the server, so it needs a window-like directory structure
    4) I want to target the same server as as the output for workstation image backups. Instead of pointing my image backups to a USB drive, I want to point them to the networked server.
    5) Nothing fancy.  Just file and image backups, a directory structure, and room for about 8 TB of disk storage.

    Any suggestions?

  • HI
Thanks for posting your issue in windows forum.
"None of Microsoft's Servers will work for me because of the domain requirements and they have more functions than I require."
I am not sure why we not go ahead windows essentials. I still think windows server essentials w2016(downgrade from wse2019) or windows server 2016 standard(downgrade from w2019) with server essentials role can meet all your needs.
But for your new requirement ,you can refer below documents. I suggest we can try to download and install Linux for testing first in vm then deployment to our environment. we also need to contact Linux support first in their forum. I am sorry I am not Linux expert ,but I think Linux support will give you best instructions.

    Linux Small Business Distros
    Zentyal, Linux Small Business Server
Zentyal 6.0 Linux based Small Business Server Install & base Config
