Difference between Windows Server 2008 HPC and Windows Server 2008 HPC R2 ?

    Question

  • So, what are the differences between Windows Server 2008 HPC and Windows Server 2008 HPC R2  ?   We are deploying a cluster with 1 head node and 4 compute node.   One license of HPC R2 was purchased and 4 licenses of HPC were purchased.  I assume this is ok.  So what are the differences between the two editions ?

Also, since we already have the HPC edition, do we still need to install the HPC pack on the nodes ?

  • HPC Server 2008 R2 Head Nodes will only talk with Compute Nodes running HPC Server 2008 R2.

If you purchased Software Aasurance with your HPC Server 2008 licenses then you can upgrade them free of charge.

If you have the Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition then that includes all the necessary features adn roles for the purpose of running clustered HPC applications.
