When I try to activate a message is displayed 'invalide product key" The prodcut key you entered will not work with this edition of Windows 7. You must either run Windows 7 setuo of enter a Windows 7 Ultimate product key.

The representative did indeed tell me that this for Volume use, not quite the words you have stated eg licensing key. She did not tell me that is was"blocked" or "invalid" other than the version I have is purley for business and not for home use and that I should contact the vendor. This version would typcially run 5 machines.

This is where I let my guard down. The product purchased was on ebay at fair price from a vendor who has a high rating, the product was valued in $ (dollars) so perhaps a bargain made by buying overseas rather than the UK. Neithertheless this was still a significant amount.

The packaging is in a black sleeve with the wording "windows 7 ultimate"on the front. On the back in shows the benefits at a glance. Inside is a plastic transparent with a seal ont the side that is broke when I opened the case. Inside is an orange booklet "welcome to your pc, simplified", one single piece of card, orange one side with the ms logo on the reverse is the product key, underneath that is a bar code and under that the words 'proof of license. See license terms. Label not to be sold seperately. And then Activate your software within 30days......in anumber of languages. Then of course there are the disc, 2 off one 32 bit and the other 64 bit, both disc are black with an orange foil like ms graphic around the outside. The whole package appears genuine there is nothing bogus about it, it is what you would expect if you bought it at shop selling computers. Is that what you meant by packaging?

I have contacted the vendor last night and have no reply just yet, having bought on ebay I think this could be a long drawn out wait.

Lets see what happens else I'll try the link you kindly posted.

    Again many thanks.

  • the report indicates that windows is not activated.

Press the pause and win key at the same time, the system properties page will display, scroll to the bottom and select activate.

If that does not work try the steps below.

Type SLUI 4 in the start menu search box, press enter, select country, dial the number, do not select any menu options and a person will answer, activate.

  • thanks Carl. Option 1 didn't work so moved on to option 2 which resulted in calling Microsoft who inform me that I have purchased a business copy (eg volume version) and not for standard retail.

I now have to contact the retailer.

Again many thanks for your help.

  • Hello peckie21,

I don't see anything in the report that would corroborate what you were told, that this is a Volume Licensing installation of Windows 7 Ultimate.  I don't think Windows 7 Ultimate is available under the Volume Licensing program.

I agree with Carl, that the installation simply needs to be activated.  These error code almsot always mean you just need to activate:

And the installed product key *****-*****-TMVMJ-BBMRX-3MBMV
is the default/keyless installation product key that would be in place if you installed Windows and did not enter a product key into Setup as it first begins installation.

Did the activation representative tell you that the product key you are trying to enter is a Volume Licensing key?  Did they say it was a "blocked" key or an "invalid" key?  Could you describe your original packaging?  (Don't post the product key.)

If it turns out that you inadvertently purchased counterfeit Windows 7 materials, you can send them to Microsoft for a replacement since you are in the UK.  Details in this post:  http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/genuinewindows7/thread/4b6f01a4-4475-4e3b-a4e4-6ec921b785b8

This would appear to be either a good counterfeit, or a copy. The -292- is almost certainly NOT a Volume key, as others here have had no problem activating such keys (after unrelated corruption problems).
I suggest that you go back to telephone activation, and try again - if you can't get the operator to activate it, ask to speak to a supervisor, and point them at this thread. They may be able to give more details on any problems you have.

  • Thought I would finalise this thread by posting the conclusion to this problem. I sure most techy's won't be thrilled with the result.

Having originally purchased this through ebay I had contacted the vendor to to see what I can do. So we had a bit of email tennis and then the intriguing part was he was interested in what was the last thing I did to the pc before I noticed these violations. Which incidently was a bunch of mircosoft updates (security updates KB981852 + plus a hot fix).

The vendor then sent me a new product code which I have now applied and got back the message 'Activation Successful'.

So a bit of an inconvenience but I'm now legal once again.

Thanks guys for showing an interest and your suggestions for resolving this issue.
