Retrieve individual files from backup RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have been trying to get clear information on the following scenario:

a PC is backed up to the WHS - just documents, not the whole OS.
If the PC crashed beyond repair and gets thrown out, how do I retrieve
the backed up documents from that PC to another computer?

I hope you can help me clarify this issue.

    Thank you.

  • Yes, as long as you did not remove the machine from the computers tab in the console and not all backups have been run into the automatic cleaning process (depending from your settings how long to keep backups). (Also the backup database should not have been corrupted, i.e. due to disk failure or server crash)

  • That's correct. (And is exactly what that topic in the help tells you...)
I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)

  • You will find the procedures you need to use to restore individual files from a backup in the Windows Home Server console help files, under the topic "Learn how to restore files from a backup".

  • Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I know how to retrieve files from the backup.
However, this is a different scenario: if the computer that has been backed up
is no longer available because it was thrown out or stolen, is it still possible to
retrieve the files from another user's computer?

    Thank you.

  • Vielen, vielen Dank!

    So, to make sure:

even if the computer is inactive in WHS, I would simply have to right click it and
call up the backup (provided it is still there) and retrieve the files to another
    computer without the RestoreCD?

I am asking because I tried that somewhere else and was unsuccessful. It is possible that
    I did something wrong.

    Viele Gruesse.
