Unable to install Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Tool RRS feed

  • Question

  • Just upgraded Windows XP Home to XP Pro SP2. I'm now trying to download updates from the Windows Update site. I seem to be caught in a loop where I get a message that a critical component must be installed first (before the site can check on what updates are available that I might need). I respond to this and keep getting a message that the Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Tool cannot be installed and to check my update history. When I check my update history I see no reference to the Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Tool, so I have no idea why it cannot be installed.

  • Dpsenner,

Are you receiving any error codes or messenging whatsoever that would indicate what the problem is you are experiencing? Did you experience any complications whatsoever during the upgrade process? If so please include that information. Please visit Windows Update Troubleshooter located here:   http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/ .  Please run the MGA Diagnostic Tool and provide us with the results back in this thread. In turn we can analyze your situation and provide you with a resolution.

Download and run the utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is tell us about the COA. Tell us:

    1. What edition of Windows XP is it for, Home, Pro, or Media Center?
    2. Does it read "OEM Software" or "OEM Product" in black lettering?
    3. Or, does it have the computer manufacturer's name in black lettering?
    4. DO NOT post the Product Key.
    5. Please also provide a short description of the issue you are experiencing.

NOTE: The data collected with the Genuine Diagnostics Tool does NOT contain any information that can personally identify you and can be fully reviewed, by you, before being posted.

    Thank you,

  • Good Morning Ellen,

Your issue appears to be Windows Update and not Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) related. This Forum is only for support of WGA. Your issue appears to be outside the scope of the Genuine Advantage forum. Please visit https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527 and submit a support request for Windows Update problem which you are experiencing. In an attempt to assist I would like to provide the following information. First please visit the following Knowledge Base (KB) article “Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation” located @ http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 . Also visit the XP Newsgroups @ http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertzone/newsgroups/reader.mspx?query=Validation+Tool+%28KB892130&dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&cat=en-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&pt=&catlist=B0DE109D-10E1-4C3C-BCC9-8EB7A22FC6A0&dglist=&ptlist=&exp=&sloc=en-us and search for Validation Tool KB892130. There are many articles you can review.

Next, recently many users have experienced problems surrounding the Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool (KB892130).   If you find that Windows Update refuses to install most patches, you can register its missing DLLs yourself. This can be accomplished by manually entering seven commands (shown in Step 2, below) at a command prompt. If you need to run the fix on multiple machines, it's easiest to use a batch file, as Steps 1 through 5 explain:

Step 1. Open Notepad (or any text editor).

Step 2. Copy and paste the following command lines into the Notepad window (the /s switch runs the commands silently, freeing you from having to press Enter after each line):

    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll

Step 3. Save the file to your desktop, using a .bat or .cmd extension.

Step 4. Double-click the icon of the .bat or .cmd file.

Step 5. A command window will open, run the commands, and then close.

The next time you visit the Windows Update site, you should not have any problem installing the latest patches.

Please let me know if this works.  Thank you.

  • Hello Promyse,

Let’s split your thread off so we may focus more attention on your particular situation.  Splitting threads are done to mitigate confusion caused by more than one posting about similar   topics allowing us to focus on each customer individually.  Please post your question here http://forums.microsoft.com/Genuine/ShowForum.aspx?ForumID=442&SiteID=25 in a new thread of your own.

In order to receive the best support, we request all users to initially run the Genuine Diagnostics tool.  The tool will try and identify the individual issue you may be experiencing.  Also, please provide a brief synopsis describing the issue including any error messages or codes. These can be found in the lower left hand corner of most Genuine Advantage Web pages when an error is encountered.

Please download and run the MS Genuine Diagnostic Tool utility at this link http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 , then click the Windows tab, Copy to Clipboard, then paste the report into a New Post on this Forum.

Step 2 is telling us about the COA. Tell us:

    Thank you,

Unable to install Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Tool
    Tuesday, December 4, 2007 9:10 PM
  • Hello,

Resolution Steps for Manual ActiveX Installation WGA

Are you having complications loading the Active X control? I would like to provide the following information and steps for you to follow to attempt resolving this issue.

Step 1: WGA Manual ActiveX Installation

    1.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    2.      Type in “iexplore http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=39204” then click ‘OK’. You will be prompted to download “LegitCheckControl.cab”.

    3.      Choose Open. Once this completes, a window will open showing two files, LegitCheckControl.dll and LegitCheckControl.inf. Leave this window open for now.

    4.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    5.      Type in “system32”, then click ‘OK’. (If you are running Windows XP, you may need to click “show files” to allow access to this system directory.)

    6.      Drag the LegitCheckControl.dll file from the window that was open into the system32 directory. If you are prompted to overwrite a file, choose ‘Yes’ to overwrite any existing file. (If you are running Vista, you may be prompted to provide administrator permission to complete the action. If so, press “Continue” and allow it.)

    7.      Click the Start button, then click “Run”

    8.      Type “regsvr32 LegitCheckControl.dll”, and then click ‘OK’.

    9.      You should see a dialog saying “DllRegisterServer in LegitCheckControl.dll succeeded.”

After you finish the above steps please restart the computer and try to validate Windows again: http://www.microsoft.com/genuine. Please locate the “Validate Windows” button in the upper right hand corner. Double click on the button and follow the guidance. Were you able to pass Windows Validation successfully?

Should you have additional problems please review the knowledge base (KB) article “How to activate Windows XP” located @ http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307890&sd=techh .

Restart the computer and contact the Microsoft Activation Center to re-activate Windows should there be problems should you need assistance. Activation and registration of a Microsoft product is located @:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851/en-us .

The Windows Activation Center can be reached at (888) 571-2048 from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM Pacific Time.

    Thank you,

  • Hi,

I am having the same problem, please help.  All suggestions have been ran.  My problem indicates no XP security updates can be installed and the first update is the Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.  The word Microsoft office 07 application won't open at all (even after trying in safe mode).  I'm not sure if this has to do with the failure to install these critical updates.

    Thanks

  • Ellen861,

At the moment your installations of XP Pro and Office 2007 Enterprise are showing as Genuine.

Since your problem has survived all posted solutions, and is in reality a Windows Update problem, may I suggest that you open Windows Updates, locate the link for Help and Support, and follow the suggested paths.  Microsoft offer free online and telephone support for Windows Updates, IMO that's your best option at the moment.

    Good Luck!

Thank you.

  • Resolution Steps for Manual ActiveX Installation WGA

    Thanks alot, worked for me

  • Hello pantelispyla,

Thank you for posting your diagnostic information. Diagnostic results help our team in determining the root cause of your issue. I have extracted a portion of your diagnostic results to review with you:

    Office Status: 103 Blocked VLK.

We are sorry to hear about the problem your currently experiencing. I can see right away what the issue is and why you are not passing validation.  Unfortunately, the product key used to install your Office Suite is a Volume License Key (VLK) that has been blocked per the request of the legal VLK holder.  As a rule, VLK editions of either an Operating System and/or Office should not be sold to individual consumers. Businesses, schools and governments normally use VLK editions for flexibility in installing many computers. Also, Volume Licenses for Windows XP and MS Office are Upgrade licenses ONLY and cannot be used as the original or base license for a new computer.

Also please review the Validation Advisor for further guidance at:

    https://www.microsoft.com/genuine/selfhelp/ValidationHelp.aspx

First, if this comes as a total surprise to you, please visit the retailer where you purchased the computer and/or the Office Suite and let them know it is a counterfeit copy.  Please print a copy of the diagnostic report so you may show them proof for the VLK status. Request they immediately reimburse you and/or provide a Genuine Copy.

Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) is here to help protect YOU, our valued customer. It is important for more people like you to report piracy @ http://www.microsoft.com/piracy/default.mspx  who have become victims. Reporting piracy will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  Microsoft legal will follow up on all leads provided.  Submitting piracy reports will assist in stopping unscrupulous business practices.  We CANNOT determine the "Quality" level of non-Genuine submissions and cannot guarantee such a thing here on the forum. You may be eligible for free software if you have high quality counterfeit discs as illustrated here:

    http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/content.aspx?displaylang=en&pg=counterfeit

Again, we are sorry to hear about your situation. Please be sure to backup or otherwise offload any data from the hard disk because a clean installation/reimaging will destroy all personal user data on the hard drive. Please don't hesitate re-posting if you need further assistance.

  • I had to repair Windows XP Professional (Academic) on a computer.  I only had the original CD.  After several mistakes got a clean load.  For some reason I couldn't register the system via the Internet and had to phone in.  They gave a long number to put in and things seemed to be going OK.  Installed SP2 from a CD I made by downloading SP2 from you website.

Tried to run updates.  First thing was Windows XP Genuine Advantage Validation Tool.  The install failed.  Tried installing SP3.  That failed.

Ran Diagnostic Tool with following result:
