multiple news messages for no reason

  I keep receiving multiple messages to say that new folders have been added, folders deleted, folders replaced but none of these things are actually happening. To add incredulity the numbers are like 100 folders, 64 files etc. but I'm just sitting idly at my comp and there are no background processes that could causing this. it seems to be working cyclicly and has been happening for a few days. There soesn't seem to be anything about it on the forums. any ideas?
