How to connect Canon SD600 camera? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have tried to connect my Canon camera SD600 to the WHS and transfer pix via USB but not successful.
    It wont recognize it.

Canon has its own utility EOS, which required for my XP PC to see it.

Have anyone had this issue? Or knowing a way to connect Canon camera to the WHS?

    Thanks,
    P.L

  • Hello,
many cameras propagate themself as USB mass storage device, but some don't. Maybe your camera is one of the last category, and therefore you will be out of luck without installing the drivers belonging to the camera (which may not work, since those usually are not designed for a server operating system.

Besides that Windows Home Server should not be used for such a direct interaction, instead connect the camera to a client PC and copy the files from that PC to the share for the pictures. (If necessary, get a card reader and plug it on to read the memory card from the camera directly.)

  • phongluu, unfortunately, Windows Home Server is built on Windows Server 2003. If you need drivers to support your camera, you will have to check with Canon to see if any drivers that will work on Windows Server 2003 are available.

In general, I would not recommend the installaiton of desktop applications on your server, or using the srever as a desktop PC. Doing so risks the possibility that someday you will use one of the tools available when your server is being accessed that way which could cause significant data loss. YOu should use your desktop PCs for desktop duties, and your server to store and serve data.

I'm not on the WHS team, I just post a lot. :)
