icons on desktop have changed

  I somehow changed something in my operating system and now non of my programs will operate. whatever I did also changed the desktop icons. I'm runing windows 7 64bit presario with amd dual core p320 with 3 gigs of ram is there a way to fix this without doing a complete recovery, and how can I stop this from reccurring
