Windows Home Server Console Will Not Open on Fresh Install RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi Everybody,
I've heard some interesting things about WHS so I downloaded the latest evaluation from Microsoft that has PP3 integrated.  I am pretty frustrated with the results as things aren't going smoothly.  Here are the facts:

As mentioned, this is the latest version just downloaded from MS.  The fresh install went fine.  Nothing was done or modified to the machine or OS after the install.  I log into the desktop for the first time and double click the Console icon, after about 4-5 seconds the Console flashes up on the desktop for a blink of an eye and then goes away.  I cant get it to launch!  With a fresh boot, there are zero errors in the event viewer.  But, after an attempt to launch the Console, an error shows up.  Here it is:

    Event Type: Error
Event Source: .NET Runtime 2.0 Error Reporting

Needless to say I've done cold boots and checked everything I know to check.  By the way, I was having this problem last night so I decided to do the entire fresh install over again the second time around gave me the same result.  NO software of any kind has been put on top of the install of WHS.  WHS is the ONLY thing on the box.  This is pretty frustrating to have to spend hours trying to fix a problem on something you're *evaluating*.  Doesn't exactly make me feel good about purchasing it when I can't get it to work.

Please let me know any other information that I can provide or test for you in order to get this working.

    Thanks,

    John

  • Hey John,

So this is a clean install, no addins installed?

    Cheers,

Yes.  I downloaded the eval from MS, burned it, installed it, cold booted after the install and THAT IS IT.  It's as bare bones as you can get.  I did two separate installs thinking something was wrong with the first install.  They both do it.

  • Okay, so I figured it out. Since this is a new box, I threw it up on a table to physically build it and install the OS. Well, I didn't have network run to that location yet. Today, I ran the line and when the ethernet is plugged in, the console opens. I unplugged the ethernet and the console wont open. Huh? Alright, I completely realize that this will normally have network when its up and running and in-use, but come on, the app wont open up if the ethernet isn't plugged in???? It wont even give you a message complaining that it wants the network??? Weird/Lame
