Can I backup a computer located outside of the house? RRS feed

  • Question

  • I just built a new home server and am trying to get the hang of things. One reason I wanted to build it was not only for my use but also for my family to use as a back-up source. Is it possible to set up WHS to back up a computer located outside of the house?

Not OOTB.  It would require setting up a VPN connection on your server (which is unsupported) or using an app like Hamachi on your server (also unsupported).  Basically, your computer must be part of your LAN in order for it to work (which those connection types/programs make it part of your LAN).  Also note, trying to run a backup over the internet would take a very loooooooooooooong time....
