Question

I've installed WLOC on my Sony laptop. The very first update has a download for IE 7. When I let it upgrade from 6 to 7 and restart after install, IE 7 cannot connect. The only way I can get back online is to uninstall 7. I tried Firefox, but WLOC doesn't agree with it and always shows a yellow icon.
IDEAS?

Chris Bukovac,
Please try the following once more and if you are still getting the yellow/fair status continue with the instructions below and we can help to further investigate this for you.
1. Go to the windows update site and click on “check for updates”. Ensure that there are no pending updates
2. Restart the OneCare service. Steps below
a. Open command prompt
i. XP -> Click Start ->Run>type CMD>then click OK
ii. VISTA -> Click Start -> Right click on “Command Prompt” -> click “run as administrator”
b. In the command prompt
i. Type NET STOP WINSS then hit enter
ii. Type NET START WINSS then hit enter
c. Close command prompt
d. Wait for 5 minutes and then open OneCare and verify if the action item is disappeared
3. If the yellow action item still appears, collect the following information and send an email to oc-forums@live.com with “Windows updates detection issue” as subject for investigation.
a. OneCare Support data. Steps below
i. Open Windows Explorer and locate the following folder if Windows is installed on the C drive:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\ii. Double click the file named OneCareSupport or OneCareSupport.exe. (Right click and “Run as Administrator” in case of VISTA). It will begin to collect the information.
iii. When it finishes collecting the information, note the path shown and name of the information file. (Generally, it is C:\OneCareSupportData.zip)
iv. Send the OneCareSupportData.zip
b. Winss_st.edb file located at “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\Database” folder. Steps below
i. Open command prompt [follow step 2a above]
ii. Type “CACLS "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\database" /t /g administrators:f”
iii. Type “Y” while asking for confirmation
iv. Navigate to the folder “C:\Program Files\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live\Database”
v. Locate file “winss_st.edb”. Zip this file
vi. Send the zipped file.

Chris Bukovac,
Thank you for visiting the OneCare forums for Update.
What operating system are you using? and what service pack do you have?
You might have some issues with Internet Explorer before OneCare was installed.
If this is the case and OneCare is working fine, I would visit the Internet Explorer
forum website at http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/community.mspx
for lost connectivity after undating to Internet Explorer 7
In the meantime, you can also try to reset the Internet Explorer 7 settings and see if that helps any:

I hope this helps,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I am using XP SP3. IE 6 was working fine until I installed WLOC and it forced me to install IE 7. Connectivity isn't the issue, I can get online using Firefox. After taking almost one hour to download and install, after restart and opening IE 7 it just won't connect to go through the setup wizard. When I click on the blue E, it just opens an empty window, the little icon doesn't even rotate next to Connecting and I have left it trying for an hour unsuccessfully. I will go to the reset site you suggest to see if I can download something to a jump drive on another computer and go from there.

Chris Bukovac,
You can also try to uninstall OneCare with the OneCare uninstall tool,
update Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7 (check to see if it works) and then reinstall OneCare and run a tuneup.
You can also try deleting the temporary internet files to ensure better performance in the browser.
Good luck,

Tried that already a couple of times. When I resart after install I click on E and open to page //go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005
The tab has the blue E and Connecting as the identifier, but it isn't spinning and the page just sits there.

Chris Bukovac,
Please contact OneCare support:
http://forums.microsoft.com/WindowsOneCare/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=2421771&SiteID=2
This sounds like more than just a OneCare issue though and you may need to use those other resources
with your operating system and Internet Explorer to do more digging.
Good luck,

Hello Chris, this is an Internet Explorer installation issue and would be resolved most quickly by contacting Internet Explorer support - 1-866-234-6020 5AM-9PM PST.

To some degree you are right. Although it still appears to be a WLOC issue as well. It forces updates to SP3 and IE 7 and installs SP3 first, which conflicts with the IE7 install, and is a known problem. I went to the suggested links and found that I needed to uninstall both and did just that. I then only reinstalled IE7 and now have no problem getting connected to the internet.
I still have an orange 1 in the tray but figure the next update will include SP3. Thanks for all attempts to assist. I really appreciate all of the suggestions everyone made.
