Missing files - RUH ROH! RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi All,
I was using Live Mesh during the technology preview, when the device-but-not-desktop sync wasn't working properly.  In trying to get some photos to sync between my laptop and desktop, I appear to have accidentally synced the .wlx placeholders between both locations.  I went to my backup drive, but it looks like the .wlx files got backed up to that location too, OOPS FAIL.

Is there a super secret location on either machine where the files might still exist?  I have downsampled versions uploaded to my picasa account, but it would be nice to have the originals.

    Thanks,
    Max

  • Yes there is a super secret location. On Vista it is: \Users\<USER NAME HERE>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Live Mesh\GacBase\HoldingArea.

In Windows XP, it is similar except you need to look at \Documents and Settings\<USER NAME HERE>\Local

and figure it out. I think it is in a subfolder and then "Microsoft" etc.

    Hope that helps.

  • In order to investigate this issue and recover your files we need more information. To do so we need your log files.  To help track your issue, we ask that you send those logs to the following email address: lmprev@microsoft.com

To create the log files for Live Mesh reporting:
    1. Click "Start."
    2. Select "All Programs" and look for the "Live Mesh" folder.
    3. Click "Collect Live Mesh Logs."
    4. Your logs will be bundled together in a cab file now located on your desktop. This file contains the information we need to resolve your concern.
Please note that even though the cab file contains all of the necessary information, our support tool will only accept the file in zip format.  Please ensure you follow the rest of the steps to zip the file before sending.

    5. Zip the cab file.  There are many zipping utilities out there but the most common is Win Zip.  If you have Win Zip, right -click on the file and click "Add to Zip." The file will be saved in your desktop, then click "Add."
    6. Open a new e-mail message and attach your "LiveMeshLogs.zip" file located on your desktop
    7. Send your zip file to lmprev@microsoft.com.

    Thank you for your patience,

    Hi Max,

Have you already sent your logs to lmprev@microsoft.com as Nadia suggested?  We would like to help you recover your files, so I wanted to follow up with you on this.  Please let me know if I can help.

    Thanks,

    Ben.

I also am experiencing the missing files issue reported by the other user.  The files are pictures that were automatically uploaded to a folder called "My Pictures" in my mesh.  I took a few more to test the system and the newer files remained.  The files contain numbers in the filenames.  Pictures numbered 4-7 are there but the first three are not.  I'm emailing the logs now.

    Thanks in advance,
    ecarrillojr

[EDIT:] OK, I just noticed that if I click the missing files in the "News" panel I can access the files from there, so it seems they are just hidden for some reason in the folder.

  • Hello,

Sorry I didn't respond to this in a timely fashion, you know, Life.

I checked the location mentioned by Michael, and sure enough my files were there.  Thanks, Michael!

I have collected my logs and posted a bug report with the same name as this thread.  I'm not sure how reproducible it is, but for what it's worth you have the logs.

Thanks everyone who chimed in with help.

    Max
