Not running genuine windows message 0x8004fe21 (Windows Home Premium 64 bit) RRS feed

  • Question

  • I've recently had a HDD fail in my PC's internal RAID 1 array. I replaced the drive and the array rebuilt itself. Unfortunately since then Windows updates are no longer running and I keep getting a pop-up from Windows Activation Technologies warning that my copy of Windows is not genuine (this copy of Windows 7 is OEM installed by Dell). This points me to an online resolution that asks me to download and run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe. When I run this it fails with error code 0xC8000247.

This is getting pretty frustrating. Can anyone please help with a resolution?

  • This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers

try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

  • Thanks a lot for your help. That seems to have partially solved the problem. Windows updates are working again.

Only problem is that I'm still getting the 'Not Genuine' pop-up. Now when I go to 'resolve online' and download and run WindowsActivationUpdate.exe it seems to work. Then when I reboot I'm still getting the 'Not Genuine' pop-up.

New version of MGADiag is below:

  • That sounds like you have something that's blocking the Software Protection Service at boot time.

There's no obvious errors in your report - so it's probably due to a race condition.

What AntiVirus and other security software are you running?

  • Firewall and antivirus is all Norton 360. That has been the case all along, it seems a bit coincidental that this would become an issue at the same time?

I haven't had the pop-up yet, today ...so hopefully this has sorted itself out now. Don't know...

    Thanks again for your help.

  • Norton would have been my guess for the culprit- although it's not related to the original problem.

If it continues to be a problem, I'd recommend uninstalling all things Norton, then running the Norton Removal Tool to clean up the dregs - it's up to you then as to whether your reinstall it or use something less trouble-prone.
