Add to storage pool with duplication vs backup drive RRS feed

  • Question

  • I have looked all over the internet for an answer so sorry if this has already been asked but what is the difference between adding a new drive to the storage pool and enabling disk duplication vs adding a new drive and setting it to backup your shares? They seem functionally the same except the former gives you more flexibility.

  • Addiing a drive to a storage pool is the method to extend storage space smoothless. Enabling duplication protects against a single disk failure.
It does not protect against user failures in data handling, malware or full server outage due to electricity issues, fire, water, theft ...
This is, what backup is for. Backing up the shared folders to a separate, usually external disk allows you, to remove this disk (temporary) from the console and take it off to a save place (at least one of these drives should be also kept offsite in a different location than the home server).
