Where Should I Start? RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hello everyone

No doubt this question has been asked a number of times, but I could really appreciate some insight from people who have been there.

I am a professional technician who, like many others, has found myself unemployed after years of working. I have an opportunity, thanks to the local unemployment department, to take a Microsoft eLearning course at no charge. I have a pretty good working knowledge of computers and computer software; I build and repair photo/video workstations and small business systems on a freelance basis but am looking to improve my chances to get an IT support job.

My question is; with one free pass, where should I start? I'd like to learn more about Windows Servers; what would be a good way to go for some kind of Microsoft certification or just to learn more about it? I was looking at the Configuring Windows Server 2008 Active Directory(Exam 70-640) to burn the free ticket on, some kind of Windows 7 and A+ certification.

Once I get my hands on stuff, I can figure it out, but I feel like I need some credentials to get my foot in the door.

Any and all advice and insight is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks-Ron B

  • 70-640 does carry a lot of bang for the buck, compared to 70-680 (Win7) or CompTIA's A+.  Just make sure that you are familiar with how servers work and how clients (Win7/Vista/XP) use Active Directory to authenticate and connect to a domain.

  • Thanks Charles-I have real world experience with Windows and Linux servers, but I feel that with job competition being what it is, I need some formal certification. With one free class, I want to step beyond my current abilities, even if I don't get certified, I will learn about Server 2008.

    Thanks again for your response.
