Head/Compute node functionality in failover cluster setup RRS feed

  • Question

  • Hi,

I'm planning to setup MS HPC 2008 R2 with failover.

    1. If the Head node configured (for HA) with failover additional head node then head node can't be operate as Computer node?

I just found below artifact from Microsoft TechNet about Head with failover cluster setup details

“In a failover cluster, the head node cannot also be a compute node or WCF broker node. These options are disabled when the head node is configured in a failover cluster.”

    2. To configure HA, Which edition should i use? Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise/Data centre(x64 ) or HPC edition

     Please advise.

  • Hello,

    1. Correct.  The step-by-step for failover clustering for the head node is here.

    2. To set up the head node on a failover cluster, you must use the Windows Server 2008 Enterprise or Windows Server 2008 Datacenter operating system.  The choice depends on hardware and features you want.  Base Windows Server 2008 Enterprise supports up to 8 processors.  Datacenter edition supports up to 64 processors and also allows hot swap/replace of processor and hot replace of memory.
