3rd Party Apps on WHS RRS feed

  • Question

  • I'm evaluating whether or not WHS would work for a nearby small business.  They have an application that requires Sybase SQL server along with several other related services, and they also run QuickBooks in server mode.

Right now, they have those running on an XP box that is aging, and I was wondering if these can be run on WHS, alongside the WHS services.  They do not have a domain set up - it is just a workgroup.

I've read quite a bit about WHS but I haven't seen anywhere if 3rd party apps like the above can run on WHS, like they can on Windows Server 2003 or 2008.

I'd appreciate any information or links that would help.

    Thanks.

Installing any app from the server desktop on WHS is unsupported (the only supported method of installing anything on WHS is through the use of add-ins, which get installed from the Console).  In addition, installing QuickBooks on WHS is not supported by Intuit either.  Frankly, if you are looking at doing anything with SQL and/or QuickBooks, WHS is the wrong product (you might try SBS 2008 or Server 2008 R2 Foundation instead).

Having said all of that, it is possible to do, but I would strongly recommend against it.
