Flakey Hardware? RRS feed

  • Question

  • For some reason I am getting an extreemly long pause between the login screen and the desktop. Extreemly long meaning 5 to 10 minutes. I have looked at the event log and the only thing that i see is an atapi read error which I am unable to track down. Any ideas?

  • ATAPI might point towards your CD/DVD media and/or your disks as I recall. Therefore I highly recommend running a diagnostic tool on your hardware. If you happen to use Maxtor disks I recommend the Maxtor Maxblast and PowerMax utilities available at

For more info regarding ATAPI, please check the following page at:

PS: I highly recommend the full read scan in MaxBlast, eventhough it will take some time to complete. Keep us informed how it goes!

  • I ran all the above with no problems reported. I did however notice that my RAID drive dosent show up under My Computer but when I go to the Sever Storage page under the Home Server Console, it is listed there and with good health. Would you say this is a software bug or a Hardware issue, because I am still getting the atapi error.

    Installed hardware:

    CPU:     Athlon 64 3200+

    Storage: IDE 160Gb Maxtor HDD

    RAID: VIA VT8237 w/2x 160Gb WDC1600JD SATA HDD

  • IDE 160Gb Maxtor HDD

    RAID: VIA VT8237 w/2x 160Gb WDC1600JD SATA HDD

Where is boot (system) drive? Maxtor?

    1. VT8237 - 2 serial ata drives - replace IDE and SATA cables. Uninstall CD-ROM or DVD-ROM. it may be cd drive.

    2. Reinstall VIA_HyperionPro_V510A.

    3. a. My computer - right button- manage - device manager - IDE controllers - Uninstall all.

       b. disk drives - Uninstall all - THEN restart (reboot) and install VIA_HyperionPro_V510A.

    4. 2x 160Gb WDC1600JD SATA - what type of RAID? Try change it.

    5. Check drives's speed . Is DMA on hdd work correct? Fore example, by Nero ... Speed must be higher then 40 mbt/sec.

    6. Take a look - Start - Programs - Start up - ? What programs?

    Win + R , (type run) - type msconfig - look there ..

  • The RAID array not showing up in My Computer is by design. Since WHS utilizes their Drive Extender technology they use that to manage the storage and only assign drive letters to the system partition and the data partition on the main drive where the tombstones are stored. If you want access to a drive in my computer, ensure that it is first removed from the storage pool via the console and then use disk management to assign a letter to it. Be forewarned that doing so may break drive extender so do this at your own risk.

  • The raid drives never showed up in My Comp, even before I added it to the storage pool. No matter, as long as i dont have to reboot the server it dosent matter. I just added another pair of 750 gig HDDs on my other raid controller.

  • Well in any case you know for certain that the hardware itself is working properly. I still feel however that there is something a bit off.

Did not respond in the time-out period might indicate the drive has to spin-up at that time. You might want to check your controller and see if you can pre-spin / initialize those drives and see if that helps.
