120gb hard drive recognize as 1111gb RRS feed

    Hello all


    My 120gb HD is recognize by WHS as 111gb.  The bios see it as 120gb.   How can I get WHS to see the right size?

  • Sorry to say, that is correct.  Manufactoring companies advertise millions (1,000,000) or billions (1,000,000,000)of bytes while every OS since dos calculates them by binary numbers 1MB == 1048576 and 1GB == 1,073,741,824.  I know this is misleading, and it is pretty much intentional.  A 120GB drive registers as 111, my 320s as 298 and my 500 as 478 (approx).  Even if you use the drive in another computer, or with another OS, this is going to be the case.  No you're not losing space, but it is being reported correctly by the OS.
