Office fails validation, is already activated. RRS feed

  • Question

  • Grrrr.

Tried to check Office Update sute for office updates. Was denied for failing to pass validation.

Checked Office program which says it is already activated.

After reading other posts attempted to delete data.dat and re-activate. This method failed as the installer attempted to re-install my office product and would not let me continue re-activation process. This machine is running the original XP office that shipped with it (Dell) as well as 1 module installed from our license current action Pack subscription.Very annoying

    Ran Diagnostic tool results follow.

  • Just About,

The XML Blob (the dense block of text at the bottom) of the mgadiag report shows that you have an unactivated copy of Office XP Pro with Front Page installed on the computer, as well as a valid installation of Office XP Small Biz (which should be the one you said came with the computer) and a valid installation of Visio 2003.

The unactivated copy of Office XP Pro w/Front Page is the one that's bollixing up the works.

Is there an entry in Add or Remove Programs that you can use to remove this particular installation of Office XP Pro w/Front Page?

  • Ok, before we start deleting programs willy nilly, let's take a look at this. The program Front Page was installed from our company's Action Pack subscription . It is the only package used from the Office Xp with Front Page installation. The Action Pack license has not been used up for this program and Front Page reports that it has already been activated. Is there someplace (file, registry key, etc.) we can look to determine why it is reporting that it s not activated?

  • Unix Guy,

I understand the inconvenience you are currently experiencing surrounding Microsoft Office Ultimate activation.  There are a few dynamics occurring.  Microsoft does not recommend running multiple versions of Office Suites simultaneously.  It is possible to install and use more than one version on a single computer.  Attached is a Knowledge Base (KB) article describing problems you may encounter and offers advice on preventing different versions of Office from conflicting with each other should you require both Office Suite versions:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290576/en-us.

Please follow the steps to attempt resolving (Office Status: 101 Not Activated issue).  Open My Computer located on your desktop.

    1) Go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\

NOTE:  The application data file may be hidden. Use the Tools drop down menu and follow:  Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show Hidden Files and Folders to show the folder. Please re-hide the files once you have completed all the steps.

    2) Right click the data.dat file, then click “Delete.  (Also you may rename the file data.dat and
         move from the folder).
    3) This data.dat file is for Office (not OGA)
    4) Once the file has been deleted, open an Office application such as MS Word and “ACTIVATE” it.
    5) If product activation was successful try the Office Genuine Advantage (OGA). Please launch the following link and begin the OGA process again: (this is the OGA part; Office Genuine Advantage):  http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/office/Validate.aspx?displaylang=eng

he following Knowledge Base Articles can provide more information for Office Activation issues:  http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/828958/en-us
How to troubleshoot problems that you may experience when you try to activate a 2007 Office product: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/919895

I noticed you have stand alone packages of MS Front Pages and Visio 2003.  This code means the product has not been activated or requires reactivation.  Stand alone office products usually require separate activation.  First I would try and activate this product then restart the computer after it has been successfully activated. Next please attempt to activate MS Office Suites after the other version of Office has been uninstalled.  Should this not work then try to active via the telephone. Activate Office by using the Internet, you can select the “Activate by using the telephone” option.  To activate the product this way, follow these steps:

    1) Start any Office program.
    2) In the “Office Activation Wizard”, click the “Activate by using the telephone” option, and then click “Next”
    3) Read the “Microsoft Office Privacy Policy” page, and then click “Next”.
Note:  You are not required to read the Microsoft Office Privacy Policy to continue these steps in Microsoft Office 2007. A link to the Microsoft Office Privacy Policy is provided so that you can read it at any time.
    4) In the “Select your location” list, select a country or region. Call the telephone number that is listed on line 2. The customer service agent will ask you for the installation ID and will give you a confirmation ID in return. Type the confirmation ID in the boxes provided.
    5) Click “Next”.
    6) On the “Activation Complete” page, click “Finish”.

Please reference the following KB Article should you have any problems:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/903275/en-us.  Here you will find links for various resolutions which you may encounter.  Also reference the following site for various telephone activation centers:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/326851 .  Please re-post here should you need further assistance.  Did this work?  I look forward to the outcome at your earliest opportunity. Thank you and have a great day!

  • Well, Almost. The best I could get using that method was 2 of three activated. Apparently the Office XP w/ Front Page and the Office XP SBE use the same data.dat file for authentication verification and whichever one was run last steps on the other resulting in the following:

This computer has failed validation. Expand for details.

Microsoft Office XP Professional with FrontPage

The product(s) listed above completed validation. However, as a result of the failed or incomplete validation(s) listed below, this computer is not eligible for the benefits of genuine Office. Remove the application(s) that failed or could not complete validation and run the validation tool again.

    Microsoft Office Visio Professional 2003

The product(s) listed above completed validation. However, as a result of the failed or incomplete validation(s) listed below, this computer is not eligible for the benefits of genuine Office. Remove the application(s) that failed or could not complete validation and run the validation tool again.

    Microsoft Office XP Small Business:
Validation Incomplete: Office Must Be Activated

The validation process could not be completed because your copy of Microsoft Office has not been activated.

    Activate Office now
    • Start any Office application. The activation wizard will walk you through the steps required to activate Office.
    • For additional instructions, or if you have problems activating Office and Office applications, visit knowledge base article # 828958. To learn more about benefits of product activation, visit the How to Tell site.
I was unable to activate Office

If you are unable to activate Office by following the steps above or using the methods in the knowledge base article, the copy of Office on your computer may be counterfeit or may have been installed incorrectly.

    What could prevent activation?
    • If your computer is new, the copy of Office installed on your computer may be counterfeit or may have been incorrectly installed.
    • If Office was installed or upgraded on an existing computer:
      • The copy of Office you installed on your computer may be counterfeit.
      • A third party, such as a repair shop, may have installed Office incorrectly or used a counterfeit copy.

When you said you were using the Office XP that came with the computer and one Action Pack component, I thought the mix was Office XP Small Biz (which was a popular OEM edition of Office XP) and Visio.

If you can part with Office Small Biz, Office XP Pro w/Front Page and Visio ought to be able to coexist quite nicely.

  • Hi
I have Office 2003 Professional Edition.  I need to have this working so I can purchase the latest update and not the whole system again!
After all these years 2003 -2010, for the last month I am getting that it is not genuine.  I have deleted data.dat file and when going into MS Word even after rebooting I get that it is activated so I can't re actovate it.  I  have the original plastic package/case with all the numbers product key and even Cd set key!
